Throw Out Bearing Help!

I am trying to mate together a stock 4spd transmission on my 65 C10 onto the engine. I got the truck in pieces from my dad so I could have a wrong part but it is driving me crazy!

The problem is the bell housing will not bolt to the engine without the throwout bearing placing crazy amounts of pressure onto the pressure plate. It almost seems like I was sold the wrong throwout bearing or is this normal? I will try and attach a pic of the throw out bearing the parts store sold me. I'm pretty sure the clutch, pressure plate and everything else is right because my dad kept everything together. I'd appreciate any help.

How do I know I have the right pressure plate???

Oh, and the throw out bearing goes with the bigger part towards the pressure plate right?

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

bolt the bell housing on without the throw out brg attached . you didn't put the clutch disc in backwards.perhaps?
if you have the pieces which came off of it then it should go back together.
are you trying to put the bell housing and trans on as a unit?. don't. it is easier to put the bee housing on and then install the trans.

I am trying to bolt the bell housing onto the engine but the problem is between the throw out bearing and the pressure plate. The T.O. Bearing just doesn't fit in there once you bolt the bell housing on. Or if you try and bolt it on with the T.O. bearing in place it just doesn't work. The only thing that makes since is that I have the wrong T.O. bearing. It seems to tall or thick.

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

but if this is the stuff that came off of it then it should go back on unless something has been changed. there is a long and short t/o brg depending on which pressure plate that you are using. the bell housing even with the wrong t/o bearing should still bolt up. take the trans away from the bell housing and it should fit
how about the clutch disc are you sure that it is in the proper way, not backwards. that will cause a problem
I see that you didn't answer those questions previous

The clutch plate is on the only way it goes on. If I put it the other way it hits on the fly wheel bolts. I know all these parts are related but right now the clutch has little to do with anything because the transmission is out of the picture. There's no way the T.O. bearing I have will work. I need to get one that is flatter. I don't know where I'm going to find one because nobody stocks it here locally to where I can just go look at one.

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

I don't know how I'm going to explain the long and short T.O. bearing to a person at a parts counter who knows zero about what I'm needing as they only look what the computer tells them. I suppose I could search the parts forum for a used one. I cannot believe my whole project as halted over a stupid issue.

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

people have been known to put discs in backwards and it pushes the pressure plate figers out when tightened.. with the clutch and pressure plate installed, bell housing installed there should still e enough room in there to put in the t/o bearing. there is enough room for the t/o arm to flop around to get it in there.it is when the trans goes in that it will tighten up in there there are 2 different pressure plates in chev. one is a diaphram style and the other is with the three fingers each takes it's own length of t/o bearing. I do not remember which goes with which one. there is a long and short t/o brg. a parts person should be able to produce both so that you can compare it with what you have

According to the Classic Parts site I have the right one if I have a diaphram style Pressure Plate. I belive I have the diaphram style as it's a bunch of fingers not 3.

just get them to look at other chevrolet applications until they come up with another part nbr and that should be it. there were only ever 2 of them. that assembly may not be orig to your truck. either clutch assembly will work in your truck as long as all the parts for each belong to one another. get them to try a passenger car application for the t/o brg. sometimes you just have to be a little smarter than the counter person

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

Do you have a flat finger or raised finger pressure plate?
Long T/O goes with the flat finger, short T/O goes with the raised finger.

It's raised. And I just went out there and tried putting in the transmission without a T.O. Bearing and in it went without any effort.

What do I need to ask for at the clueless parts counter?

So what do you think I should give to them Ron??? Obviously the year make, model and engine doesn't work for them. Do me a favor and stay out of this thread. The only clueless one is you. I admit I was clueless until Geezer showed up and came up with a real answer. All you have done is liter the thread with ramblings of a bored poster with worthless assumptions.

Thanks Geezer.

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

Whoa!!
I side with padre on this. Take your long one to the parts store, slap it on the counter and tell them you want a short one.
Nuff' said!!

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

I went and returned the thick one and had them try car, truck, 4x4, from 1962 to 1975 and their computer keeps pointing to the same part number. Obviously something is wrong with their system. The truck has been in family since new and only had like 46k miles when it was diassembled because of a bad ring so I doubt the parts arent original or not correct. I guess I will search online.

Re: Throw Out Bearing Help!

So I saw your post on my email 5 minutes ago.
You didn't search at the store well enough.
I checked Rockauto.
1965 Chevy Corvair.
SKF #N1488
Length 1.2575
Outside diameter is 2.9 (yours was 2.85) darn close.
Rest of measurements the same.
Took me longer to type it than find it.

Find a better store to shop at!!!

That is the truth! It especially becomes challenging when you're dealing with a torn apart truck with some small parts missing altogether. No parts to match the new one! The engine install should've taken place 3 weeks ago. Seems like every time I work on it I find one little thing that slows me down a week. Well, at least I'm getting close now.
