63 front clip removal

Yes I know to most its ez...just remove some bolts and its off! But for me ( learning as I go) its difficult to know which bolts to remove! I've already removed the fender extensions on each side, also removed the bolt on the bottom of the inner fender, also removed two bolts that look like they hold the tad support to the frame. I've loosened the two bolts on each side on the firewall where the hood hindges are. Also removed both bolts on each side of the rear of the inner fender. I see some small sheet metal screws around the steering column...looks like they need to be removed ....now I'm lost, front clip is still on but seems to be loose but it ain't move n.. I tried to remove the bumper but can't get to some of the inner bolts. Does the bumper need to come off first?
Any help would be appreciated...as I mentioned this is my first goaround at this..

Re: 63 front clip removal

on my 65 the bushings of the rad support were stuck like glue till I put a jack under them and popped them loose.

othewise if you got the ones hiding under the fender extensions and in the door jamb and at the firewall on the inners you should be gold. bumper doesnt need to come off (although on the 65 it already was)

here you can see a lot of the firewall side bolt holes

orrrrfff

did it on a 62 too, bumper on.

Re: 63 front clip removal

Think I got all of them, esp the ones hiding under the fender extensions. Guess I should remove the hood....might make it easier to remove the clip. I'm doing this myself so I'll need to hook up my engine hoist some how. Thanks for the pics, they ate definitely helpful....anyway of pointing out the location of other bolts? Guess once I remove the clip,I'll be able to get at those hidden bumper bolts.
Thanks for pics!!

Rusty, I might have some parts you'd be interested in depending on what your doing to it.

Re: 63 front clip removal

hope this helps:
if doing this yourself, take the hood off (you will need 1 person to help put it back on)
fender extensions off ( 4 bolts each) ... which you got off.
under those: 2 bolts each side (9/16 socket) -save the shims!
then the lower 2 bolts on the bottom.
now two bolts each side at the top of the inner fenderwell .
then 1 bolt each side inside lower inner fenderwell (also pull the steering column cover)

now to the front:
1 bolt each side rad support to frame (sometimes I have had to use a jack to get the rust to break loose from the rubber and metal washers)

sometimes you can leave the radiator attached, if there is a shroud, that has to be pulled, and the upper radiator support has to be pulled.

I have found it is way easier to pull off the front clip with the bumper off:
the 4 captive bolts to the frame horns can be challenging sometimes; access is not a problem, but usually they will want to strip , if you can get enough of the nut undone, you can grab the head with some vise grips.
the 2 outside brace to the frame sould be fairly easy to get off, on the inside you need an open end wrench because the bolt is behind the rad support brace.

with the bumper out of the way you don't have to wrestle the grille support from behind it.

unplug the wiring harness from the firewall. and unbolt it from the alternator.

now you should be able to lift the front up and pull the whole clip forward, once it is far enough I just tilt it up and let it slide off the frame horns to the ground (good idea to put cardboard, or a blanket -something so you don't dent it up and scratch it.)

you should try to find someone to help you for an hour or so to put the clip and hood back on, it is just much easier that way, and less dents and scratches.

Re: 63 front clip removal

Thanks for your description on where the bolts are located. Found em all and found that the core support was rotted on one side. Had to wrestle the clip over the bumper...took awhile to get those fu$*n bolts off!
Thanks again to all .
