All I can tell you is if it's a 3/4T, it's almost definitely an HO52. I believe HO72 came only on one-ton trucks. It's been discussed before, and if I'm wrong, someone will be happy to point it out.
As to the load bolt, all HO72s had them, and some HO52s had them but some did not. My '72 K20 has an HO52 with a load bolt.

bignbad, I'm pretty sure the only difference in those two axles is the size of the brakes. At any rate, the bearing numbers are 99.9% stamped into the bearing, so if there is any question, just bring the bearing and whichever seal is least mangled to your Napa, and they can match them up for you. Bearing part numbers are common across lots of manufacturers, but a Napa can definitely cross them for you if you have an off brand. I've also found rockauto.com to be a great resource for looking up parts. They do specify which bearings are for the Dana 60 and which are for the HO52, and in many cases even give you sizes.

Yes, and possibly the axles (if it's a one-ton?). The pumpkins (and all internals) are the same.

Hey bignbad,
if I recall correctly, the HO72 I have under my 72 had 3" wide brake shoes. Took all that stuff off and saved about 75 pounds of weight in the process. I do believe the axle diameter is beefier at some dimension also. The HO72 was designed for 1 ton trucks ... but it fits nice under 1/2 and 3/4's too. I did have to reposition the shock mounting tabs on the axle tubes for my truck. Detroit Locker in there never let me down yet. 72longbed |
