That's one weird truck. If it truly was a factory made cab, why wouldn't they've used the side door off of the Suburban? Then again, it would be a 3-door pickup, like the extended cab trucks of the late 90s.

The factory did not make them that way. They were converted by an outside company. Most of them were for the railroad I believe.

Maybe a different perspective will help. This is the reason for the conversion. Stock doors were used to keep thing simple and serviceable though some conversions did cut down door and beds vs frame mods. The concept has lived on with both International and Freightliner using "fronts" on a factory crew-cab medium duty truck.

I love those big trucks, I just wish I had the cash to get one. One of these days (like when I am 50) I will get one. Something about a 4 door longbed 4x4 dully with a 454 and a 6 speed makes me drool

There was a 4 door longhorn (actually a GMC so not technically not a longhorn) on craigslist awhile back. It was really long.

The sad thing is they got it so right on the 60-66 conversions, and so wrong on the 67-72 conversions.

Yes, it is possible to build a very nice non-period truck that way. The Suburban's higher roof line and squared door frames lend themselves well to such a conversion. It is a lot of work as can be seen by a members build thread. The cabs he builds are full four door Suburban style that go for a reasonable 15K.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=499490 But the original point here is these trucks were aftermarket conversions to provide a utility need that Chevrolet did not address like Dodge, Ford and IHC did. In fact IHC had both full crew cabs and their version of a Suburban with the rear top cut off making a short pickup. Being as these were new work truck conversions, using lots of cross body parts would not be cost effective. Stretching the cab and inserting two more doors was. It took about a week and added a 1000lbs weight to the truck. For the life of me I can't see a 1/2 ton conversion carrying six people and being under maximum weight. Added a couple of pictures for those curious enough to dig into it. Also a paste up I did to see what a shortbed could look like.

That truck is in Darien NY about 6 miles from my house. I looked at it about a year ago. I'd be interested in it at about $1500. Not throwing stones, just stating what I would be willing to pay for that particular truck.
