327: Small or Large Journal
Buddy of mine gave me a 327 all machined with 4-over pistons, 2-under crank. (Yep, for free :-) Need to get rings and bearings for it.
Anybody know exactly how to tell if it's a small or large journal engine? David

I'm not positive but I beleive that the small journal engines had pressed on vibration dampers, and the large journals are bolted on.

You could look up the suffix code at nastyz28.com and if its a 68 block its large journal.. everything older is small journal.

Small journal cranks have 2.3 inch mains and 2 inch rod journals. Large journal cranks have 2.45 inch mains and 2.1 inch rod journals. and jhhwks is right most large journal cranks have the nose drilled for a balancer retention bolt.

the quickest way to tell at a glance......the rear flange(that the flywheel bolts to), is round(machined) with 2 notches cut out on the SJ crank. The LJ crank has a more oblong shape on the rear flange(like a little counterweight added). crazyL
