Headers?

What kinda longtubes is everyone using?
I see Summit has their brand and Flowtechs for about $100. Has anyone used these?

Re: Headers?

I ended up getting Headman thermal coated long tubes. From what I understand you get what you pay for. The cheaper headers usually have thin metal flanges and are prone to warpage. The more $$ the thicker the flange and the better the product. Obviously there are some sucess stories out there but I just settled and spent 350ish on the Hedmans.

Re: Headers?

I have some jegs painted headers that were $120 long tube of course, they seem too do the job thus far haven't had a whole lot of drive time just yet but will be soon.

Re: Headers?

I am using the cheapo heddmen headers. th ball and socket joint is awesome but i have had some cracks at the collecter. i had smashed them a few times since welding them up and havnt had any more problems. i have read that 69 chevell long tubes work great and tuck a little higher

Re: Headers?

I have the cheapest painted Flowtech LTs on my truck. They've been on there for like 4+ years and haven't had a problem, other than banging the collectors on speedbumps since they hang pretty low with a 6/8 drop.

Re: Headers?

good trick is to cut thin flanges before you put them on so they dont warp.

REMFLEX gaskets also cure any warped flange no matter how bad too

Re: Headers?

$89 Blackjacks I got about 15 years ago through a buddy at Western Auto. They're not pretty, the paint burned off within minutes and the flanges are all bent and warped, but they sound cool uncorked, and believe it or not I probably got not quite 1 MPG out of them. I've probably replaced the gaskets 10 times, the last time was about 5 years ago. I smeared Ultra Copper RTV all over the new gaskets per the recommendation of a turbo Buick guy and knock on wood they haven't blown out yet...

Re: Headers?

Has anyone used the autozone header coatings that come in the spray cans? Also is there any advantage from using headers from an older Chevy car vs the ones made for our trucks? And lastly hows install on these? Ive put a set on an '88 Vette that took a few hours but theres a lot more room in my '83 C10-anything I should expect while doing the install? Just dont want any surprises :/

I haven't but I'd assume that if its paint, it'll burn off over time, I just put headers on my 77 wasn't too hard actually, thing I do suggest is, if you already have some piping done cut as close to the stock intake manifolds to make it easier to take them out new long tubes should fit in fine just when installing put 2 bolts in the front then put 1 at the back then put the rest of the bolts in, just don't be in a hurry to do it, haven't heard about swapping headers from a car to truck. Hope it helps you some!

Re: Headers?

I've had inexpensive long tube Hedmans on my square for over 20 years with zero problems.

Umm not much except passenger side you can put the header in through the top or bottom of the truck. if your rides lowered, you shouldnt have a problem. just make sure to undo the battery box so you have room to fit the header down the side of the engine. another snag. it would be wise to run 2 1/4 inch exhaust pipe from collector, if you plan on 2 1/2 inch the crossmember for the trans wont allow it.

but with 2 1/2 inch, i dont think a lil grinding of the cross member will hurt, never thought of it but now im thinking of doing it. the 2 1/2 inch pipe will clear the drivers side with no problems though if you plan dual exhaust.

see i keep telling em those passenger car headers work on our trucks! but i wouldnt mind some cast iron Ram Horn factory headers, ole boy who sold me my truck wanted my flowtecs i had laying around, gave him them for $10 bucks so he could have headers on his 72 c10. look under the hood low and behold a set sitting right there. then he sells me the 78 stepside and im without headers intill my brother inlaw dislikes his headers on his nova. tryed to keep bothering the guy that sold me Quicksilver if he wanted those and id buy em off him, but he never answers me.
