Can't get the *&!$* tranny bolts loose...
So the "freeze" plug behind the motor mount is rusted through and another is about to go. I figured I'd just pull them motor, slap some new ones in, and be done with it.
After about 3 hours or so last night, I was ready to go. Got under the truck to loosen the tranny bolts and that's when the fun started. THEY WON'T LOOSEN UP!! I got the bottom one on the driver's side done, but the one right above it ain't happening. I tried 1/2" impact with 3/8" extension, universal and socket, and nothing. I was able to get my rachet and socket by itself in there, but there's no room for leverage. It's a 700r4 sittin behind a 350. I had the tranny rebuilt about 6 months ago and I think the shop used epoxy (just kidding) or something to keep the bolts in. It's driving me nuts. If I can't get it loose tonight, I'm going to see about removing the bolt on the cross-member and seein how far I can pull it up. Maybe it'll be enough to let me get at the plugs. Not unless ya'll have some suggestions?!? Thanks...

I feel your pain... has happened to me several times, ended up pulling both together.
I've started pulling the motor and tranny together all the time now, regardless.

Re: Can't get the *&!$* tranny bolts loose...
I know when I pulled my motor, I couldn't get those bolts either, so I just pulled the tranny too, unhook the shift linkage, the two or 3 wire plugs, the speedo cable, and undo the one crossmember bolt and pull the tranny too.
Then you can clean it up as well! Just my .02 Posted via Mobile Device |

I just pull tranny with engine too. Be a big mess if you snap a bolt.

Re: Can't get the *&!$* tranny bolts loose...
Welp, looks like that's what's gonna happen. And here I was bustin my knuckles tryin to get the bolts out.
The linkage, cross member bolt, speedo cable, and lockup wiring is easy. Do ya'll disconnect the lines at the radiator or on the tranny? I see doing the radiator as the simplest, then just undoing a couple of brackets that secure them to the frame. Also, should I just pull the radiator out to get some more room or am I good to leave it in. I do appreciate the help. My son uses my truck to get back and forth to school and work and right now, they have to ride the bus and he waits on us to get home before he can get to work.

Re: Can't get the *&!$* tranny bolts loose...
I'd yank the rad. It's expensive to replace and it comes out really easy. Dunno if there's enough room with it installed I've always pulled them.
If it's AC equipped put some plywood in between the condenser and the engine compartment.
