Np-833 - a833 - np440
I bought a 71 c10 and it came with what I believe from my research is a NP-833 - A833 - NP440? Not sure what they are most commonly called in the GM family?
I plan to do and LS swap and I want to keep this same 4sp tranny? Anyone have experience with these and how much power they are good for? I read an article saying you can use a sachs 1050 flywheel on the LQ4 and an 11" clutch Gm bolt patter. I think the NP-833 is a 10 spline input shaft, any recommended a good 11" street/strip clutch that will take 500rwhp?

I'm not sure if this will help you,but I have the A833 in a 82 GMC K25 behind a 6.2. I really like this combo,nice shifting little tranny,fun to drive.I like it better than my 86 K20 with the SM465,I know the old 465 is better for towing,but I don't use either one for anything heavy,got a Dodge with a 24Valve for that...

Do you have an iron case or an aluminum case? Aluminum case versions are not as strong. It seems most of the 4wd cases are iron and most of the 2wd are aluminum. I personally would hesitate to use one on a 500hp HP LS motor. They were designed for fuel economy not racing.

No. Understand these are NOT the same A-833 that came behind the Hemi and 440! They have had the gears swapped to get the overdrive, and subsequently the torque capability is greatly reduced, particularly with the aluminum case. GM never put them behind big blocks, or even 350's, for a perfectly good reason. They are not and never will be a race trans. Will they live for a while? Sure, but so will a Saginaw. If you drive nice they wil give good service. But if you beat on it with big HP it's a goner.
If you want to run serious torque sell it and get a better trans. They go for $250-400 with shifter and bell, which will get you a good start on a trans capable of your power.

I've got one behind a cammed 5.3L, but haven't run it yet and never plan on any racing and I wouldn't think if putting slicks behind it. I did meet a trans builder from Texas who says he's had some luck with them on some higher horsepower street cars...but 500 horses would probably bring a quick death.
If you want to see the parts list of how I did this check out my "Popeye" build thread and search around here for NP833. I listed out the exact parts. If you don't have a good unit with a solid, non-worn front bearing retainer don't bother. Also, you have to check runout on the bellhousing...it's a must.

This trans is exactly the same as the aluminum OD A833 from the Mopar A-body line and was used almost exclusively behind the 225 Slant-6. They do NOT live behind a V8 very long.

Thank, this is exactly the type info I was looking for to help me make my decision on whether to keep it or not. I already have an interested local buyer who wants the SBC and tranny, so maybe ill let it go
