Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
New rebuilt motor, don't care much for the stock exhaust I have on there. It's a chevy 305 with a 3/4 cam, .40 over bored sitting in a 86 K10 .Money isn't too much of an issue, but I'd like to keep it under $400. So what's the best set-up for a combination of sound/performance? I appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
"Well, I got a 426 Hemi in her. Three-quarter cams, nitro boosters. I can get 'er up to 155. Never do though, of course, unless I'm chasing a cute chick in a Ferrari! Hahahahahahaha!" On a more serious note, a dual setup with flowmasters or magnaflows, depending which sound you like. An X pipe is the latest fashion these days but it adds some to the cost and I don't know how hard/easy that is to do on a 4x4.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
Sweet car dude, I like it, good luck with Ferrari chase haha. If you end not catching her, there's always room for a beer at the local joint.
What size pipes would you recommend? Right now they have 1 1/2 or 1 3/4, not sure but whatever they are they sound terrible. You can hear the truck from a half a mile away, even in a low gear going slow. |

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
For a warmed up 305, 2.25 pipe should be fine. If you are planning an engine upgrade later, you can go with 2.5 though it's a bit overkill for what you have now.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
I appreciate the advice. By "overkill", do you mean it's more than I'll need, or will it have a negative effect on my exhaust flow.
I doubt I'll do an engine upgrade, I just re-built this motor from top to bottom, I plan on getting many many miles outta her. |

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
The idea is to keep the exhaust velocity up to help low end torque, the 2.5 pipe won't help with that and it will cost more. 2.25 is good choice if that engine is permanent.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
Thanks, 2.25 it is then. What about headers? I have stock exhaust manifolds, they aren't in too good shape but it's all I had at the time. I plan on replacing them, not sure if I"m going to go with more manifolds or headers.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
Dyno max has a dual system for our trucks for about 132 dolla. What kind of sound you looking for? Quiet cruze? Kill your neighbors or wake up the dead?

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
get on youtube and find a sound you like.
exhaust is generally my favorite part of a project. i've had everything from quiet to pissing off the neighbors 4 miles from home. flowmasters drone in the cab, but i'm past the loud because its loud stage. i had spintech sportsmans on my el camino, they were ok, i really liked the sound on those. i'm a big fan of hooker aerochambers. loud when you need them to be, and mellow when you're cruising. it's all about preference, and what you can stand for noise level in the cab. i run a hooker aerochamber on my lsx swapped camaro, but it also has a cutout in the i-pipe when i need to announce my presence.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
I've got one of the Dynomax DIY kits with the cheapo Super Turbo mufflers. They were pretty quiet at first but after the packing gets settled they have a great tone. Noisy when you get into it, quiet when you're cruising. Not loud loud, but a good sound. It's lasted going on 12 years, starting to get a little thin around the clamps. Mufflers are also starting to come apart at the seams but by and large I've been very happy with it. Had I mounted the mufflers with the drain holes down they'd probably last longer...

Black Sheep lol. I was waiting for someone to get the reference. I can't help but think of that movie everytime someone says 3/4 cam.

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
Heres a picture of the truck. By the way, I want to refrain from starting a new thread so hopefully you guys can help me. There is slight knocking/ticking sound coming from the engine bay and underneath the truck. I highly doubt it's a rod bearing( I replaced them ). The truck is a 1986 K10 305.
I'm thinking it may be a knock sensor( I don't know if this truck is suppose to have one or not) Valve leash( I set it before I started the motor after the rebuilt, and it doesn't sound like a lifter, but then again, I'm an amateur). Or possibly a loose bolt on the flywheel or flexplate. Any ideas on how to diagnose this sound? |

Re: Exhaust recommendations? 305 K10
Thanks I appreciate the advice! I'll be sure to do that. On another note, do you happen to know where the vacumn hose for the 4x4 hubs goes? It's automatic hubs so I know they run off a vacumn, I'm just not sure where. The 4x4 differentials work, the hubs just won't lock. I'm 90% sure it's a vacumn hose I left off when I rebuilt the motor I just don't know where.

vac line would be from the manifold ,usally behind the carb, to the tranny only no vacuum needed for 4X4 auto hubs just engage manuals have a twist dial and full time has a solid plug

I thought they ran off a vacumn, possibly to the canister in the engine compartment. There is a line( VAC I'm assuming) that runs from the front differential to right above the canister, but it plugged off ( and always has been, even when the 4x4 previously worked). Maybe I'm missing a wire connection somewhere for the Auto-hubs. Any Ideas? The 4x4 worked before I rebuilt the motor, so I'm sure something is unplugged somewhere. The truck will still pull through the differential the hubs just won't lock. |
