What's the difference

I'm use to C10 etc... K10, K20... Now I'm finding out that my 87 GMC LWB is a R1500 ? What are and how do they come up with these codes. Or is it even an R1500

I'm no expert but I think it's GMC being different so you don't call it a Chevy. I would think spec wise they are similar 10 to 1500, 20 to 2500.

c is 2wd K is 4wd. in 87 they changed it to r for 2wd and v for 4wd, as they wanted to continue using the c and k designation for the new model coming out in 88, and they were still building the old body til 91.

Yes...every tim i go to the auto parts store.... I tell them R10....and they ask me what is that?....So i just tell them its a regular truck

You'll notice we never did it that way again. From that point on new models were referred to by their program designators (aka GMT400, GMT800, GMT900, etc) and the differentiation occured in the model numbers.

But the codes are generated by the engineering specifications group and are particular to the platform (like X car, Y car, A bodies, F cars, etc).

The ones that get me are the body/chassis codes: 03 - Regular cab, 43 - Crew, 53 - Ext., 06 - Tahoe/Yukon, 16 - Suburban. Right before that sequence in pickups isn't it 7 for shortbed and 9 for longbed? GHAH! The ones I do not have figured out are the GMT-400 C3500HD chassis codes, my suspicion is those codes are more wheelbase oriented.

Yes - so C10703 would be a 2wd short box regular cab;

K10903 would be a 4x4 long wheelbase pickup;

K10906 is a 4x4 Suburban.

Been that way as long as I can remember -

For Cab Chassis there is also a 310 and a 314 wheelbase.

By the way: my first day in Engineering was the day they split the teams into the "carryover" C/K/R/V group and the GMT400 group. There was lots of whispering and tense speculation, and I didn't really understand what was going on. My only thought was "...PLEASE don't send me back to the assembly plant!"

Hahahaha, that must have been tense. I can't imagine the learning curve on that one for everyone when it changed over.

I've seen K20903 and I think K25903, is that a GVWR difference in 3/4T 4x4s? (or am I imagining a K25903?)

No difference. We've used that character in the past to denote different platforms but of the same GVW.

Also - relative to the emblems on the side of the truck (like GMC 2500 vs 200 series) - those are just pure Marketing fantasy. They can put whatever they want on the side but it doesn't change the components used or the rating of the truck.
