How to lock out an auto lock??
I recently bought an mid-80's GM 10 bolt front axle, and I want to figure what gear ratio it has. The only problem is that it has auto locking hubs, and when I spin the wheel/rotor, the driveshaft does not turn with it.....I want to figure out how to manipulate the axle to get the driveshaft to turn with it.
Oh, the axle is on jack-stands....not on the truck. Thanks for any help you can give! |

Re: How to lock out an auto lock??
Be a whole hell of alot easier just to pull the cover. Good idea anyways to see what's going on in there...

What happens when you rotate the input yoke?

Re: How to lock out an auto lock??
Yup. Should always pull the cover and inspect the guts when you buy a questionable axle anyway. Paying to refill it with gear oil is a small price to pay in comparison to replacing the guts.

Re: How to lock out an auto lock??
The auto-locking hubs a "sketchy" at best in the first place and over 30 years old in the second. What you really need to know is how to swap them for manual units.
PS, you are never going to get them to lock by turning the rotor. That is exactly opposite of the way they work. You might get one locked by turning the input yoke, but not both to figure gear ratio. Just do as most of us always recommend, pull the cover and physically see it with your own eyes. That will tell you more then a guess at the ratio anyway.
