hardwood flooring for bed floor?
Has anyone tried to make a bed floor out of hardwood flooring? The bed in my 67 lwb is gone, I have the strips, but no wood. I don't have any money for a wood kit right now, but I have about 50 square feet of white oak left over from a home improvement project a few years ago. It would definitely look better than plywood until I could afford to do things properly. Any thoughts/tips would be much appreciated..

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
I think once it gets good and wet it will buckle real bad on you because it wont have any room to expand. I have seen hard wood floors in houses after the fire department put a fire out and they buckle up bad from the water.
Not sure how you could put it down and leave room for it to swell with out it looking bad.myself i would just get a sheet of marine grade plywood and use that untill you you can spring for a nice wood kit, seal the plywood good and it will last for a good while. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
That could be interesting to laminate HW flooring strips together to lenght, rip it to factory width then mill it. Maybe SS strips? I can't say I've seen it done but it may look pretty cool.
I'm not so sure I'd ever reuse the bed strips though. You could mill your own bed wood out of pine fairly cheap.

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
Yeah, my thought was to try and refurb the strips as well as I can, and rip the wood down as needed and run them down the router table to make the flooring go in as GM intended with the strips. Worst case, I'm out some stuff I already have, best case I have a bed, even if it doesn't hold up more than a few years. Regardless, the boxes of flooring will finally be out of my way. I'll let everyone know what happens, and I'm not afraid to post pics of things gone horribly wrong, so we may all get a good laugh out of it. Hopefully, though, I'll be posting pics of a cool looking bed floor.

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
I have seen others done like this. If done right it can work. The way wood is prepped in a house isn't ment for water to sit on it but it isn't prepped for that either also if u keep it covered or out of weather will help

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
I did not ask just kinda thought you meant like 2" wide strips but are you talking about 6" wide planks? Because if thats what your using so long its sealed good then it should not really be any different.

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
I believe he's laminating the strips together into wider boards.

Re: hardwood flooring for bed floor?
I'm actually thinking of using 2" wide tongue and groove. Thinking I'll just mill down the necessary pieces and try to assemble units that approximate the size of the proper bed wood, then put it in. We'll see how it goes. Look for pics of the attempt in a month or so..
