engine skip/lugging help

ok so i recently did a rework of my exhaust with headers true duals etc. but after i finnished my truck lugs at low rpms and seems to be skipping. doesnt have a problem at idle or after i downshift. its mostly at about 40 mph when im cruisin in 4th. what should i look out for? how easy is it to mess up the spark plug wires? cuz its possible that the wires have fried against the headers but im not sure.

Re: engine skip/lugging help

most likely a wire isnt clipped on all the way, i would just swap them out for a new set though-i've seen a set of wires that looked fine cause a missfire. good luck.

Re: engine skip/lugging help

If it was a plug wire it should be running rougher at idle. You can let the truck idle and pull one plug wire at a time from the cap and see if the idle gets rougher. If it does, then that wire was working, if it does nothing, then that wire was the problem.

Have you touched the timing or any vacuum hoses?

havent touched the timing its at 6 degrees advanced. i removed the smog stuff when i did the exhaust system and put the headers on, so i had to cap some vacuum lines. its possible that some of the plastic ones cracked cuz i broke one and had to fix it...

Re: engine skip/lugging help

Double check your firing order just to make sure you didn't slip a wire on the wrong plug...sometimes it is very easy to do.

i guess thats possible... but if that were the case atleast 2 would be wrong and that would seemingly cause more problems than i have

Re: engine skip/lugging help

check the order
vacume advance could be sticking
may wana check the actuall metal tubes sticking out of the carb
some loosen and can pull out a bit changing hoses

and i think you may need to be still advanced
i think I'm up over 10 now...i just changed my distributer
runs better

Re: engine skip/lugging help

Spray a little penetrant on the vacuum lines to see if there leaking the idle will change if it is, I would also recheck your firing order just incase 2 got swapped.

thanks for all the help everyone. but the factory recomends 4 degrees advanced (to reduce emmissions) i know advancing it further will increase power and even economy though so i will do that
