tach woes?

hooked up the tach dash. I hooked the red or pink wire to the ignition unfused terminal in the fuse block. there are 2 terminals one didn't work and the other does but I can only get @ 2500 RPM. Is this the wrong place to hook up the switched terminal for the tach? The tach worked fine before the rebuild and the only thing I can deduce it to is the ignition terminal. How did you guys run the switched wire of the tach harness. Thanks Mark

Turmoline,

I have a tach dash I'm going to be hooking up this morning. On mine, there is a brown wire which is labelled "coil" which I assume goes to the distributor.

There's a red wire labelled "12v" which I assume goes to the ignition.

And there's a post that's unlabelled. I'm GUESSING that this goes to ground.

Can anyone verify this?

I've hooked the brown one to the neg. side of the coil, but at the dash I just plugged it in with the harness.The stock harness I bought has only 2 wires brown and pink(or somewhat of a red). I didn't look real close to see if there were any other posts. I'll have to go under there again. Thanks for the reply. Mark

You could try grounding the inst panel a bit better, but it just sounds to me like your tach took a dump to me.
Is it an original?

longhornmail it is the original tach dash. I've had it out for about three years while I was building the truck. It worked well before. The only thing thats different is that I plugged the switched ignition wire into the ignition unfused portion of the fuse block and didn't know if this was the right place or not. Can you confirm?Iam going to look into the grounding issue first or try to place the switched ignition wire into a different place. If indeed the tach took a dump I would assume that you can just replace the part that your'e showing me at the back of the dash. Never had one apart so I don't know if there is more involved to it. Krue the name turmoline is the color that I'm painting my truck. It's a 99 mazda 626 color. It's funny though another guy on the board told me it was a precious gem. I had no actual idea what it was only maybe a certain shade of green.

I know nothing about repairing these (or any) guages. In all reality, it would probably be cheaper to get a reproduced one.
As for what terminal it goes to, it really does not matter as long as it is shut off with the ignition switch.

I tried grounding it and also tried a different place for the switched hot wire neither one worked. I guess having hei should have nothing to do with this I don't know. Maybe I'll just pull the dash and direct test it. Thanks for the replies.

Turmoline,

I got my blazer fired up tonight! I'm having the exact same problem with my tach too! I hooked up an external tach to troubleshoot it, and I found that the tach is right on, except it just seems to hit a wall at 1500!

Have you made any progress with yours?

Anyone else have any ideas?

bpmcgee. No progress. I'm a little stumped at this point. Getting ready to go on vacation. When I get back I'll probably end up tearing it apart to see what it looks like on the inside unless maybe you come up with something in the meantime. Never had one apart so I don't know what I'm up against as of yet. Keep me posted. Thanks Mark

Mine did the same thing in my plow truck, I kept revving the engine to get more movement out of the tach, and tapping on the cluster. It seemed like it had a sticky spot, and finally broke loose. Works fine to this day. Hope that works for you, maybe mine was dumb luck!
