Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
Found this on the net this morning. Price seems kind of high. What do you all think? This place is only 20 miles south of me so I may go look at it on Monday and check the SPID and overall condition.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
well someone took all of the trim around it and put dents in the body where the trim should be. So you have the empty holes to deal with or spend the money on trim, the body LOOKS rust free. Now the interior it has an 80's steering wheel and it looks like a rip in the seat. Now i does have the add on ac which could be from the dealership> IMHO I think the truck is worth about $5500 -6500 but thats just me in Pa a truck that clean would probably go for $6500

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
I'd have to say the same, maybe $5000. I guess it really depends on what you're plans are with the truck. If you're going to tear into it and change a lot of stuff, then 5k is to high, however if you're going to drive and fix along the way, 5k is OK. Just my opinion!!!!

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
I think it's way high.I don't see $5000 there myself. It would have to be completely rust free and have a lot more going for it than I can see.Looks like a Case of Barrett-Jackson-itus to me.
It's a short bed V-8 truck. And it is fairly clean bodywise but I don't see anything else going for it.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
I’m glad to hear I am not the only one who thinks the asking price is…..well, pricey.
I still may take my son’s truck “Nancy” for a drive that direction on Monday and give it a good look over. I might even try to find what the bottom price could be. I’m not too familiar with the ’70 trim levels. As pointed out by BBO – the bottom trim has been removed. Can anyone tell what trim level this truck is/was by looking at the photos in the ad? I’m thinking it is a custom. Thanks!

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
It doesn't look to be in a lot better condition than my truck, and I gave $3600 for mine, which included an additional transmission, rear, all the parts to covert to power brakes, an extra grill, and a new front bumper.
Floorboards are probably better than mine since its in Texas, but body and interior look about the same. Might be worth $5k if its rust free.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
My opinion is that it is priced way to high. Yes it looks to be good solid sheet metal but it does need a lot of metal work to be straight.
I would ask, what are your plans/needs for the truck? Are you looking for something to restore and make a nice show piece or just a nice driver with a decent paint. Under the hood needs a lot of attention. The A/C is an add on that I am not sure of the origin. Tires and wheels look nice. I am fond of the hub caps but that is not a selling point for me. Bottom line, I see a $2,850 dollar truck that needs a good $1,000 to $1,500 to make real nice with out paint considered. Just my opinion. |

I would make him a fair counter offer and see what happens. If you are interested in it. Its a buyers market for the most part. Good luck

This is Texas, and the prices here are sky high in my opinion. It's worth the asking price in todays market here in Texas.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
I will go against the grain and say not a bad deal if you are going to keep it original (unpainted). Not a steal but I would pay $6000 in heart beat if I were going to keep it for my self. Piece together some used trim (I would add the top trim) and some othe used parts and you have a nice survivor. I bet some of those dent could be poped out or done by paintless dent guy.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
Not a chance at $6995. For that price the paint would be nice, interior should have been clean. You are gonna tie up $200 or more for a good seat cover (reupholster), another $75-100 to put on a decent steering wheel, and this are just what you can see. If it were me, I would make sure oil pressure was good, be very critical of any and all oil, brake, coolant, and diff fluid leaks. If you have a Midas near the owner of the truck, I would go have it put up on a lift and get under the truck good. This is where you can and will spend $1000's of dollars in repairs.
If you dont go that far to cover yourself, I wouldnt spend more than $3000. I can get you a stepside or fleetside here in Iowa for that. Remember, an project cost a lot of money and need to buy accordingly. |

I agree about it being way to high, I think 4k would have been a better starting price.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
OK, went and looked at this truck today. The sales people (father/son) were not in so the resident body guy assisted me.
The truck is the real deal - all documentation (protecto plate, original sales receipt, and owner's manual) included. The truck was rough. The 3 on the tree shifted very smoothly which was a shock. However, the play in the steering really concerned me! It really needs a new steering box and a steering column rebuild. I don't know how anyone could safely drive this on the road at highway speeds. The truck had only surface rust...and a lot of weird dents and all exterior trim removed. It hasn't been registered since 2010 and not safety inspected since 2000. The original front painted bumper has been replaced with a new chrome one (it is only a custom c/10). The original wheels/caps were replaced with what you see. This is according to the guy trying to assist me. The same guy who told me this was a 1971 truck. I did my best to be kind and educate him on the differences between a 1970 and a 1971 - I had driven Nancy (a 1971) so it was pretty easy to convince him I knew a little about the trucks. Bottom line - this one will cost me $5K (body guy said this is what the dealer paid for it). He also said the dealer is taking it to a swap meet this weekend in Decatur, TX. Seems like a lot of these guys are taking these trucks to a swap meet the next weekend when you're looking at a truck. Anyway - I passed (too much money for what was there). Here are some photos. Notice how the SPID sticker shows the wheel base to be zero. I thought that to be very strange. Hopefully someone (SS Tim) can elaborate on this. Thanks for everyone's responses!

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
I love the truck and I would like to have it for around 5. BUT then I noticed there is something fishy with that spid. The vin font is wrong. look at the 7s and the 4, the 4 should be open at the top... The ink is way too dark. Compare it to the other print on there. You can almost see the numbers they covered up behind the 7s.

Re: Found a '70 Shorty - Opinions?
That is weird. I don't know why someone would go to the trouble of changing the SPID, though; that's not the official serial number location. It does look like there is a number underneath.

I wouldn't pay the asking price...but I bet he will be able to sell it to someone for 5K.

The chrome window trim was part of the Z62 option. The chrome front bumper is not and would be listed as an option. The lower body molding would be an easy correction as would the wheels. The interior color would be more of a problem but you should be able to get material from SMS if the seat cover neeeds replacement. Here are two code 623 imterior pictures. Depending on what you can actualy get the truck for it would probably make a nice driver as is bodywise. Remember though sitting is not a good thing and it may very well need brake work along with the steering issue corrections mentioned.
