Use of RTV with 1 piece oil pan gasket??
This is an old question which keep coming back - do you use RTV or any other gasket sealer with 1 piece oil pan gasket such as Fel Pro 1880K? I just pulled an oil pan of a recently built 350 which was put on dry except for the half moon corners. It leaked at the bottom of the front lip, while the rest of the gasket perimeter was dry like a rock. Which begs the question - should RTV be used and where??? Does any one know? Fel Pro installation sheet that comes with gasket is rather useless in this regard. Oil pan appears to be flat and square.
Thanks //RF

Re: Use of RTV with 1 piece oil pan gasket??
I use a small amount only where there are joints in the gaskets. We all know what happens when you put silicone RTV on a rubber gasket and tighten it up. The gasket squeshes out and sometime splits. I put some on the joint areas, then assemble it and snug the bolts enough to have firm contact to seat everything then let it set until the RTV cures before going to final torque.

I had to find out the hard way that they don't seal if installed dry. Get Permatex gray RTV.

Re: Use of RTV with 1 piece oil pan gasket??
Thanks for feedback fellows - in this engine build black RTV was used on the oil pan rails, but not on the half moons (back and front). The front half moon leaked like sieve - I suspect that I had malformed oil pan or timing chain cover. On the next go around both will be replaced with better pieces in addition to black (or gray) RTV.

Re: Use of RTV with 1 piece oil pan gasket??
This ^^^
I've installed at least a dozen of the Fel-pro 1 piece oil pan gaskets with only a dab of RTV in the corners. No leaks yet. Gary
