Amber gets tunes.

So the insurance cut me a check for my car finally and I went shopping. I picked up a very nice '92 Silverado 2500 with low miles and had not been abused or cut up (that's my job).

My daughter calls her Amber because of the red stripe. I like it.


The dealer I got the truck from had just replaced the heater core, so that was a bonus. The interior is crazy clean, but I noticed a lot of rust on the base of the seat and the bolts on the drivers side were rusted. After a lot of PB blaster, I got the seat out.

When I pulled the carpet up, the drivers side was soaked. The pad was dripping and the floor looked awful. So out goes the carpet and pad.

Back to the stereo. The stock '92 has 4x6 in the dash and 4x6 in the rear pilar. I didn't want to do a bunch of work, so I decided to replace the dash with 4" round 2 ways and the rear with 4x6 2 ways.

Here's what I got all together:
Pair of 4" round (dash)
Pair of 4x6 (rear)
Pair of 6.5" separatres (door)
10" shallow sub (rear)
MTX TN400/4 400 watt 4 channel.

Out with the old, in with the new



Sub box (.75 cubic ft sealed) and amp rack. Sub isn't centered because I wanted to fit the tool box back in on the passenger side.

Sounds pretty damn good. Total cost was just under $300 total (deck was in the truck).

I have some intermiten motor noise, so I went to Car Toys to see if they had any ideas. I thought it might be my ground. The shop manager took a look at it and said "This looks better than half the guys in here" I fewlt better about that.

I think it's in the deck. But it works for now. Enjoy.

I did need to trim the vents in the dash to clear the slightly deeper round speakers. I used a dremel to trim a section out and used foil tape to seal it back up so the vent is still functional. I also want to trim some dash out to get the deck to sit more flush. Will have to wait on that for now.

Looks like you did a good job, any idea why the carpet was so wet?

The heater core leaked inside the cab. The dealership had just replaced it, but based on the amount of rust, it must have been leaking for years. There was quite a bit of antifreeze in both the carpet pad and the heat insulation on both driver and passenger sides. The drivers side was the worst.

There was a puddle of water under the sill plate where the speaker wires and dome light wires run on the drivers side. I still can't get the drivers seat belt bolt out, it's rusted solid.

So I got everything built and went to put the tool box back in and realized I am an idiot.

The lid of the stock tool box is 26", but the tray of tools inside the tool box is 29". So I ended up having to move the sub and amp rack over 3", then reinstall/rewire everything. I did most of the work at my buddys house and ended up forgetting my modified tool box at his house. So I still need to put the tool box back in once I get it back.

The good news is the stock carpet the covers the back was now 3" too short, but the other side (that I am not using) was enough to cover it. I just had to trim it to fit, then redrill the mounting holes in the carpet.

I wish I had a real SPL meeter, phone mics cut out above 100db, so you can't get a true measure using an app. But it does show good sound spectrum curves, so I am happy considering I don't have a true active crossover, just the filters on the amp.
