Drive shaft for a 70 longbed with a 700R4

I need help trying to figure out if there is a newer model drive shaft that will fit in my truck. I have a 1970 longbed that was a factory 307/350 combo. I now have a 350 and am putting a 700R4 in. My 350 turbo is a short tail shaft model so the 700R4 is about 3 inches longer. A friend of mine says that the 88to 98 body style truck one piece drive shaft will bolt in with no modifications to the drive shaft. He has done this on three 72 models, but he can not remember what the shaft came out of. Does anyone know what year and model chevy the shaft comes out of to fit my application? I have tried several shafts from a local Junk yard but with no luck. Thanks in advance.

I just went through the same thing. Installed a 700R4 in my 68 GMC, I used the drive shaft from an 86 Suburban (one piece). I believe the overall length of the drive shaft was 69" not including the yoke. I used a conversion joint from NAPA at the rear axle. Mine worked out well. Good Luck

Why not just have it shortened and balanced.....cost me right at $75 each here.?? Sounds like you will have more invested in wrong shaft than to fix the one you have.

My drive shaft is a 2 piece and I would like to go to a one piece. The junk yard I am getting the shafts from is a family friend so they are not charging me to try their drive shafts. If I cannot find one that is my next option. Thanks though. I will seeif they have an 86 suburbin shaft today thanks.

Your best bet is to find a 1310 shaft that is too long, take it and your tranny yoke to a driveline shop with your tailshaft to center of rear joint measurement have them put good new ujoints in it shorten, and ballance.

Some people don't notice a driveline vibration even after cracking 3 transmissions. Best to just have a pro make sure its right. And for $100 plus your salvage shaft it beats digging through the junkyard for 3 weeks.

Or take your trans yoke and measurement down to the driveline shop and spend the $200 on a new shaft
You might tell them that you're on a budget and ask if they have something used that might work.

Whatever you do don't use precision or house brand ujoints. Stick to spicer and neapco.
