Help with SM465 squeal - video included
Hey guys,
My SM465 transmission has developed a squeal, but I don't know the first thing about transmissions and was hoping someone might be able to diagnose what's causing it. I don't know if it's the transmission or the clutch. It happens most often in 4th gear, but will also occasionally happen in 3rd gear. It squeals when I get on the throttle and will go away when I let off the gas, so I can make it come and go by getting on and off the gas. I took a video in the hopes that it would help everyone figure it out (I think you can hear the squeal over all the other engine rattles, tapping, and noises). It comes in first right after I get into 4th gear at about 0:23 in the video, and then comes back again at 0:29, 0:50, 1:00, and 1:14. I tried to post the video to YouTube, so I hope this works. Here's the video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apsB...e_gdata_player Thanks for any help!

Do you mean the carrier support bearing on the driveshaft? I should have mentioned this but I just replaced that and the noise happened both before and after I put the new one on. I guess the new one could be bad. That would be great if that's all it is. I can live with that.

Cool, I'll look at the u joint too. But you think it's driveshaft related and not transmission/clutch?
That's great. Thanks for the help! Posted via Mobile Device

Could be the throw-out bearing if the clutch is not adjusted right.

i had a bad throw out bearing on my truck every now and then you would go to push the clutch in and it would squeal like hell even when shifting but it only did it every month or 2

Re: Help with SM465 squeal - video included
OK, thanks Shyguy and 69chevy.
The clutch is getting pretty worn so the throw-out bearing could very well be it. I followed the procedure in the manual and tried adjusting the clutch a little bit but I had heard horror stories about guys going too far with adjustments and pushing a weak clutch over the edge, so I didn't do too much. I guess before too long I should think about putting in a whole new clutch. Thanks again to everyone for the help. None of the suggestions mentioned the transmission so that's a relief. I had heard that the SM465s were pretty much bulletproof so I was a little upset that mine appeared to be going out. Thanks again!

Not only if you do go to replace the Throw out bearing do replace the Pilot bearing as well, for the simple fact that is what happened to mine, only the flex plate was throwing sparks & other stuff out of the Bell Housing. And I remembered I didnt put the pilot bearing back on when I installed the engine.
