Are you sure he didn't misunderstand you? Registration is more along those lines. Inspection is like $15 or so.

Re: Texas inspection

Smog test is for vehicles 25 years old or newer and only in compliance counties. That runs 47 dollars here in my county.

Once it's 25 years old, it's just a 14.50 safety inspection but they still do a visual inspection to see that smog equipment is still in place even though there is no way to verify it working or not.

Re: Texas inspection

There is actually no stated limits on the amount of driving. It says you can drive to events such as shows, parades, and even to maintain... I guess the only way you could be found out is if your in a small town and they figure out your driving it daily. I don't drive mine but only weekends. I drive a company car during the week... :-) a PATROL CAR .....

Re: Texas inspection

I used a YOM (year of manufacture) plate on my '74. The previous rainbow colored plates were a little lame, IMO, and the YOM plate looked much better. I was able to use it like a regular license plate after taking them to the tax office. The '74 is one of the few older cars I have had that I wasn't sweating the inspection on.

If your truck is a 1984 then all you need is safety inspection and that's about $15 since your truck is over 25 year old
You can look up all this info and print to show them on TXDMV website

Your fortunate that you have a Y/M that they still made plates. They stopped make year specific plates in 74, so that won't apply to any later model trucks.

True. The fact that the lettering was the same color as the truck was icing on the cake, too.

Re: Texas inspection

You TX guys have it nice. Here in CA ,75 and older is exempt. All others need to pass smog. Ive passed up alot of trucks because they had all the smog crap missing. Its going to cost over a $100 just to reregister my truck that has a non-op on it.

When I was buying my truck a few months ago I kept running into lets just say people who have no business owning a car. Who would remove all the smog equipment on lets say a nice 81 rcsb, and use a Edelbrock instead. Then they get all mad when you ask for the smog equipment, and or offer 1/2 to a 1/3 of what they asked. Because of all the work I would have to do just to get it back to smog legal.

I have a few friends who could get me passed, but I would still have to pass the function part. Its just annoying to use them because the place has to be empty of customers to get it done, and I still can be flagged for a test only place. Where I have no friends, and no one I know has a friend I can get passed.

Re: Texas inspection

California rips y'all off on the "non-op" deal too. I'll be damned if I pay the state money to let my vehicle sit on my own property.

I suspect y'all have a state tax too ?

It defies all logic that the state that taxes and fees most heavily is so broke but other states like here in Texas are very easy going with that stuff yet we are still so much better off financially as a state.

I know it's stating the obvious, but OK is even better. No inspection at all. We got rid of that in the late '90s.

Re: Texas inspection

Fill out the paper at the courthouse and pay your money. They will give you new plates.

Install the plates, peel off your old inspection sticker and be a happy man knowing you won't have to worry about state inspections anymore.
