Stock GMC 1949 Front Shocks?

My Dad needs a source for new stock front shocks for his 1/2 ton 49 GMC.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Stock GMC 1949 Front Shocks?

We tried NAPA with no luck. Anyone have a replacement part # or any source?
I don't have any earlier catalogs or intent access at home.

Pretty sure a 1949 had lever shocks. The Chevy's did anyway.

Not sure what you mean. Lever...is this a type?, Mfg?
I need to know what and where to buy replacements. I know very little about pre 67's and have no catalogs (yet).

You need to do a little more research and give us some info to help you. Below is a lever shock. Is that is what is on the truck?

The mounts off a newer truck will bolt right on, then you can run newer shocks.

Google is your friend!!

Re: Stock GMC 1949 Front Shocks?

Yep, as Coach529 said, they ran lever shocks to 1949 and switched to tube shocks in 1950.

As he said you could get the brackets and bolt them on and use tube shocks. Someone who has swapped to an independent front end may have all of the brackets for cheaps.

OK, I get it now. I wasn't involved with his truck at all so I don't know what he's got on it but now I have a place to start. Thanks for the help guys. I'll make a trip over there this weekend and figure it out. He's in his 80's and won't even try to turn on a computer.

Sounds like he went to different highschools with my mom. She can type like a bandit on her old Olympic manual type writer but won't touch a computer.

Re: Stock GMC 1949 Front Shocks?

Thanks Coach for posting the great shock photo.
I have heard the term dropped around, but had never seen a lever-shock.
I have owned older cars ('48 F**d sedan), but was pretty young and not much of a wrench, back then. :-)
