Early Spring Morning

I was on my way to a job yesterday morning when I saw this and had to turn around for pictures. We had some big storm that brought snow in the night and it snowed all day. The most accumulation was at dawn. Through the day it melted faster than it lay and by afternoon the flakes were itty bitty size.
Anyway,I've seen this rig before. I've seen it sit so long I wondered if it died on the jib. No disrespect intended. I think it's great this guy still runs the ole B. By his set-up I think he knows exactly what he's doing. He seems to stick to a very local area. Where I saw it 5+ years ago was within a few miles of this site.
Here ya go:

you see, its 40 years of weather like this is why the misses and I are going to Quartzite for the winter. We'll camp in the desert close enough to I 10 so I can watch the trucks go by.

Re: Erly Spring Morning

I just love the old relic type shots. This old veteran is still earning it's keep. You know what well drilling costs and I'd say this guy's equipment is paid for. And talk about doing it with style! The only thing better would be a GMC from the same era

I always thought it would be nice to follow the good weather. I don't mind some winter, but a shorter one would be cool. It was closer to 40 that day, kind of a fluke. If it was warmer we would have seen 18" they say. This is late for snow around here. We had no snow worth mentioning all winter, except late fall and that was just like this one. Never got over 5" but snowed enough to be close to 2',because it was too warm at the surface.

Re: Erly Spring Morning

you don't see that much old stuff working around here any more but I'll start watching more. I don't go anywhere without packing 3 cameras. Fairly rare to see a B model here, not that many R models either. I had a B years ago, had the concave back of cab made for the round front freight trailers. Ever heard of those? I didn't realize how rare it was till I had traded it off, had a 464 gas mack engine.

Re: Erly Spring Morning

No,I never heard of those before! Crazy. Yeah,Macks are bigger back east for sure. That B is an unusual sight around here. We have a local crane service who has vintage trucks I admire. He keeps them tip-top. They're all lighter cranes...the type that are built on regular truck cab & chassis. They are detailed nicely with good old hand lettering and pinstripe. I don't see them on the road much now that home building is all but nonexistent. I know he has at least a couple as old as this Mack and the newest is a GMC 9500,probably from the '70s.

Good 'ol B-Model. They are cool trucks. Also like the 6-73's that are in a whole lot of them. I like how they sound. Strong engine too.

I remember those. I once saw one on a Dump Truck. Right away you knew it was a converted Road Tractor.

A restored B with the Concave Cab along with a period correct restored Trailer sure is an attention getter at a truck show.

Re: Erly Spring Morning

I'm really sick about trading it off but that was 30 years ago when I was young and stupid. I've only heard about 2 or 3 left according to what I've seen on the web, the back glass was even curved to match the shape of the freight trailer. Anyway, just got back from the Moab easter jeep fest, maybe 500 jeeps down there or more, saw some weird stuff, took lots of pics. I may start a new thread on the I think its the 73 to 87 forum titled under Blazerchalet easter weekend Moab, might take me couple a days.

I wouldnt mind a B. Was a guy here who had a B with a twin stick, and no right arm. Didn't seem to slow him down much. Jay

Re: Erly Spring Morning

Good typical sound of a Mack.

Believe it is a 6-73:

I would have downshifted a little sooner, but it is a great example on how much torque these trucks have. ...Fully loaded and uphill to boot.

Here's a '57 B-75 with a 262 Cummins.

Believe it is a Quadra-Plex Trans (5 X 4):

Re: Erly Spring Morning

Cool to see fleet paint jobs from factory. I'm thinking we should keep this thread going as a Mack B* thread (others welcome,of course). Here are more from that same little show. This was down near the ocean just outside of Salisbury,MD...Perdue Chicken capitol of the world!

Re: Erly Spring Morning

The 3rd one down is pretty much how I like a B-Model. On the simple side with some extra Chrome.

Mine would have a 6-73 with a 5 X 4.

...Ok, I like to shift!!

Re: Erly Spring Morning

A little bit before I got behind that one I followed, there was a grain body tandem stopped waiting to pull onto the hiway from a country road. It was still on the job with a load. Noting pretty, just old paint and an old truck being used for what it was made for.

That's a great one, alright. Only thing better would be put that on the ground and run it!
Bill,I liked those clips. There's an old Mack doing what it was built for.
