After a long break, I picked up a 79. Now I need exhaust..

Hey all, glad to have a Chevy truck in the family again. I picked up a pretty nice 79 LWB Big 10 Bonanza from it's second owner. I'll have to post some pics and info, it's pretty cool and I'm sure you guys will appreciate as much as I do.

At any rate, the guy said it needed exhaust and when I was running carb cleaner through the PCV....haha...smoke was billowing out the bottom of the (probably) original muffler. Even better, it has a giant cat under there.

I've seen guys talking about using Camaro headers since they tuck up better, on my 69 I hated how low the headers hung. This one isn't going to be lowered but I like to keep it clean. Just wanted to confirm which headers people are using.

Hooker? Hedman? I think the 69 among other Camaro headers are what I've been seeing people use, just not sure if all brands are ok.

Thanks!

One member here by the name of gchemist used Chevelle headers if I remember right. I know he had to have a custom transmission crossmember made to make them work. I have seen his truck in person and it is quite low to the ground and the exhaust is definitely tucked. Maybe he'll chime in here.

Sound like you have the catalytic converter transmission crossmember. Those make running the exhaust a nightmare no matter what headers you use. All the more reason to go aftermarket or make one.

Thanks for the info. Looks like it would be easy to tuck the pipes up but I'll have to have another look. Of course I don't know where the collectors end up on this truck, so I could be way off here!
