Need some help
Hello everyone!
I have a 69 3/4 ton pick up. It has a SB 400(checked ID stamp) with 4 speed granny trans. I want to know what 6 speed (manual) options would be best for me? Would that improve highway dirving? I'm a do it your selfer Thanks for any answers! |

Welcome to the board. I have been looking at the 5 speed manuals as well. It seems the NV3500 is becoming a popular choice for OD manuals. 6 speeds may be a bit more difficult. I am sure it has been done...

A Gear Vendors O/D is going to be an easy addition. They can be found used even with the four speed adapter. It allows you to split gears and have an overdrive gear.
Couple of questions come to mind. Do you tow much? Is your truck a factory manual trans. truck? What gear ratio and tires are you running now?

Hello guys!
Sorry for the late response. My truck is factory except for 33/12 tires it has 8 lug 12 inch wide wheels in the back and 8 lug 8 in in the front (I believe) Im not sure what the gear ratio is for this truck. It hasn't been modified Will I have to modify the driveshaft with gear-vendors? I will post pics when I figure that out Thanks for the responses!!! |

The 400 SB was not factory just to be clear. A 396/400/402 BB was.
Remember a O/D installation or swap is not something you are likely amortize through fuel savings. It primarily provides lower engine speeds at cruise and in the case a G/V allows you to split gears making it easier on the engine and less RPM drop between shifts as would a AA Ranger O/D. A Gear Vendor O/D does require modifications to the driveshaft. It may take you a while to find one used. But when it is in you will love it. A Ranger mounts in front of the trans pushing it back so there is a shifter issue. NV4500 or NV5600 trans swaps are possible but you need to sort out a number of installation issues. You need to us an adapter plate to keep the stock clutch linkage (with modifications) or install a replacement bellhousing and change to a hydraulic clutch. Then there is a trans. mount issue to. The plate adapter retains the stock mounts at the bellhousing. Many swaps use a rear auto. trans. style mount. So either way there are modifications involved. The G/V unit bolts to the rear of the trans. and other than the driveshaft cut is fully reversable.
