Smog Test With A Different Twist
I'm in need of the expert advice from the members of this Board. I need to FAIL a California smog test. I have an extra 78 square that has been a very useful parts donor. Now I need to deliver it to its final resting place. The State of California will give me $1000 to retire the vehicle if it fails a smog test.
All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
Pretty easy to do in California. Just remove any piece of original emissions equipment and that will do it.
You could also dump some motor oil in the gas tank so that there is a noticeable amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Effective and amusing!

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
Run your timing up and run it lean. Something to give the appearance that its mechanicle sound and all equipment works but is to worn to pass

This truck must be in pieces if you want to fail it. Hope it's not a clean one

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
Buy a cheap, "big" cam and slide it in. It'll manifest as high NOx levels and you'll fail.

Im surprised noone yet, has mentioned you asking on here about defrauding a smog test. I actually dont really care. I am however used to seeing someone drop in with the legal twist. Good luck.

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
Seeing as how the State doesn't seem to care about 69 million dollars in welfare fraud, I really don't see them getting too excited about a fraudulent gross polluter payout.

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
wow , so the do-gooders are now paying to rid the planet of old classic cars ? and salt in the wound is that the tax payers pay for it. sounds like a program we have here in portland where on one day a year they use tax payer money to rid people of their guns . on that day bring any gun into the police station and they give you $50 bones no questions asked.....the sheeple proudly line up...

You cant stop the government. And sure the emission mandates may be a fraud, but what can you do about it? Your frustrations would be better met on a political board. |

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
I've just about parted out everything that's usable. The sheet metal is a goner, the rear end whines like a banshee, the interior is just about gutted, trim pieces removed, tranny slips and slides like a 1960's dance craze, windshield and windows cracked like an egg, and the tires are balder than me. I have enough together to drive it to the designated junkyard. It's a 454 with 360,000 miles on the clock and currently running on six cylinders and still passes smog! How? Got me.....

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
This just goes to show how broken and ridiculous the whole smog game is. A guy can have a nice fresh motor with a few performance upgrades that runs nice and clean, yet he fails on technicality while an old junker blowing unburnt hydrocarbons everywhere sails right through. You've got to be kidding.

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
Good luck with fail. Just put an aftermarket air cleaner on it. Instant Fail... the 454 and th400 core oughta be worth something though
Cali is killing all the old Diesel trucks faster than the old cars. I drive an 07 peterbilt that isn't going to be emissions compliant and the end of '13 or add a 10k diesel particulate filter. Yay Ca all the seem to be good for is catching fire and burning the truck down. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Smog Test With A Different Twist
Easy - unplug one of the plug wires. One cylinder of unburned fuel with every 2 revolutions of the engine. Sure to make the HC's too high.
