LS-1 in 1971 SWB C10

I just aquired a 1999 LS1 out of a Camaro with a 4L60E and I am going to put it in my new shortbed project. Is there anyone on this board that has installed an LS1 in one of our trucks yet? Anyone that can help with the chassis interference pitfalls would be greatly appreciated. I'm ready to get out the grinder, MIG welder and my wallet and get it done.

you might want to check out this link beating this question to death

I know its for the LT1 but some of it may hold true to the LS1. You already got it made with the accesory brackets.

Hope you give us some progress.

We have the plates that position the ls1 in the proper location in 67-72's if interested. They are 1/2"aluminum with correct countersunk bolts made on a cnc, they let you use all brackets, headers etc for 67-72's. Call our tollfree line for more information.

Ok the difference between the Corvette ls1 (not ls6) and Camaro ls1 as far as swap into our trucks is the arrangment of the accessories. On the Corvette the ac compressor, and I believe the alt. also are mounted up high. On the Camaro ls1, which is what I put in my truck about a year ago, the compressor is low. It actually fits between the frame rails.

1 Homemade motor mounts- To install the motor you actually have to cut or grind away a little from the frame for cmpressor clearance(which is the route I took). Even doing so it is still a pain in the butt to get to the compressor. If you can build your motor mounts up so the engine sits higher you might be able to advoid this. But if you decide to do this, you might have a problem with your tranny clearing the floor of the truck.

2 Because there is no distributor, you can move the motor back closer to the curve in your firewall (for radiator and condenser clearance if needed).

3 Intake- the Camaro and Trans AM both come with a ram air type set up where the air cleaner box sits on top of the rad support. The stock air cleaner box wont work in the swap. This is where you have to be creative beacuse you have a mass air flow sensor and a MAT sensor in the stock ls1 intake system. Simply bloting on a cone shaped filter to the throttle body might not work because of those sensors. Most people put a custom elbow and route the filter towards the side of the engine bay.(to know what im talking about it looks the the stock Camaro lt1 set up)

4 Tranny mounting - Depending on your height of your motor mounts comapared to mine you will most likely need a spacer between your x member and tranny. I made a spacer from alum about 1.5 in. high, but this height will varry with the height of your motor mounts. Put your truck on level ground and put a level on your intake manifold and a jack under the tranny, make sure the motor and tranny are level and make your spacer from there. Also the tranny x member will need to be pushed back and rebloted (easy part)Obviously you will also need to shorten your drive shaft because of this.
