Can somebody recommend a 5-speed trans for my 66 chevy 292 6 cyl?

I am wondering if somebody can reccomend a 5-speed trans and the adapters needed to hook it up in my 66 1/2 to shortbed. The truck has a 292 6 cyl in it.

Just talked with Mr. Langdon at Stovebolt Engine Company last night. We are working together on some carb tuneing on my 65.

He highly recommends the T5 for these trucks. In fact, he indicated he'll have one back, freshly rebuilt in a week or so...ready for sale. He also has the engine adapters, etc to get it installed.

Superb gentlemen, quite knowledgable and one of the enginers for the 230/250 family of engines.

So, I'd jump on the T5 myself but ain't got the cash right now and still tweeking my new carb and ignition from stovebolt.

But, holler at him, leave message. He'll call back, usually in 24 to 48 hours and very often on Sunday for long discussions.

It might take time to locate one, but a T5 from a 1988 through about 1994 V8 Camaro is a common swap. The other T5 trannys from S10s need an adapter plate but are used as well. The torque of your 292 might be too much for a T5. Other options are more expensive. Tremec makes nice transmissions and they can handle the high torque. Maybe a used one can be found. Many folks go with an AT, a 700R4, which has an OD gear.

I have a 1988 V8 Camaro T5 that will be mated to my 250. It can handle normal driving and the horsepower and torque specs all match up fine. I plan to make a build thread to show the process.

an NV3500 can take 330ft/lbs of torque, a T5 should be able to handle that too and the 292 wont put that much out would it?

My 292 will have an estimated 320 Ft. pounds of torque when I am done pumping it up. The tremic the Tom at stovebolt has is to expensive for me to. Used I believe they run about $850(Why I am Lookin for recommendations).
Tom is a good man to go for technical info I will say.

I'm no expert, but I have collected some info about the T5 on my web page. I have a few pics that show some of the differences between the World Class T5 (WC-T5) and the Non-World Class T5 (NWC-T5) transmissions. Go the the top section of my web page and click on the "T5 info page".

The $850 price for a Tremec that's ready to use is not a bad price. I think the cheapest you will get a usable T5 for will be about $100 from a salvage yard and then you will need an adapter plate, so add another $150 to that. If the T5 needs a rebuild, parts like gears are not very available for the NWC-T5. The nice thing about the T5 is that it lets you use your factory mechanical clutch linkage and bell. You'd need a new clutch disc and pressure plate.

I have a WC-T5 from a 1988 Camaro with the 305ci V8. According to the GM Heritage Center documents about the 1988 Camaro, only an automatic transmission was offered with the 350ci engine in 1988. The 305ci that year was rated at 220HP at 4400rpms. The same year 350ci had 230HP at 4400rpms, which is only 10 HP more. The torque rating for the 305 was 255 at 2400rpms and 290 at 3200 according to the GM Heritage Center documents. It seems safe to say that a Camaro WC T5 tranny would be suitable for everyday driving with a Chevy engine with similar specs.

You are correct about the shifter location on a T5 from a Camaro or Firebird. It's at the back end of tailshaft housing. The location isn't really a problem if you are using bucket seats and have room for it to come up between the seats. If you plan to keep your bench seat, then you can swap the Camaro tailshaft housing, shifter mechanism and case cover with one from an S10.

Here's my Camaro T5 with the Camaro tailshaft still on it.



Here's the same tranny after I swapped in the S10 tailshaft housing. Now the shifter will come up through the floor in front of the bench seat.

The last year for the T5 in the F body (Camaro/Firebird) behind a V8 was 1992. With the introduction of the higher HP LT1 in 1993, the T56 was standard with V8. T56s are great, good gearing, double OD, high torque rating. They are expensive, though, used ones go for over 1k regularly. I put one in my Impala SS.

I was considering a T5 for my 65 C10 230... but I just found a complete 3spd OD with the wiring, switch and handle.

I have a 1962 C-10 with the Stovebolt 6 and the 4 speed will that T-5 trans bolt right up to my application?
I'm an FNG and would love the Overdrive.

The F-body T56 six speed has a 450 ft/lb torque rating and I've bought one for $600 and another for $700. The LT or LS versions will work but they need different ways to make them work with your engine.

The 93 F body T56 has a slightly lower 350ft-lbs rating. The only difference is the gearing, though. There were two gear sets for 93. The 94-97s had the .5 6th, and the 450 rating. One advantage with the 93 is you don't have to run as low a rear gear.
