Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

Well, this will be my first thread of something we are building strictly to sell. We are starting on a 1970 GMC short bed. Starting out with 2 trucks that most people would consider in trash. The first donor truck is a 1970 GMC long bed with factory air and posi.

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

The second donor truck is a 1969 chevy short step. The cab and front clip are toast, so we will just be using the frame. The bed will be saved for another build.

We will use the cab, front pass. fender, hood, and motor and tranny off the GMC. Also we will convert it to 5 lug off a '77 chevy. (3rd donor truck that I forgot to mention)

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

Change of plans. We decided not to use the 1970 GMC long bed, but we are now using a 1972 GMC Sierra Grande. It's a much nicer truck, and needs almost no rust repair (driver side rocker) compared to the other, which needed everything. We are using the cab, front clip, and front suspension.

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

Well, today We were able to get the short step side stripped down to the bare frame, and began cleaning for paint.

And got the '72 Sierra grande stripped to bare frame, and pull the front suspension. Now it's spread all over the shop.

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

Last night we got the frame mostly down to bare metal, and almost ready for paint. We've kinda slowed down on this one, but hope to get back working on it steadily this weekend.

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

The other night we got the front half of the frame down to bare metal, and painted it.

We decided to take a break from the rear half and work a little bit on the cab. After taking the front window out and door rubber, I was surprised about the rust we found. It's hard to explain, but the pictures should give y'all am idea. Still haven't really thought of a way to fix it, especially because it has gotten into the dash too.

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

If you are set on using that cab then it's easy enough to fix, drill out the spot welds take out the dash and start repairing the rust, easy enough, more than you wanted to do I'm sure but not that big of a deal.
Before you tear into it that far I would make sure the cab is worth saving, if it has rot in a bunch of hard to repair areas then I wouldn't mess with it.

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

This project has been put on the back burner for now. We have way too much going on at the shop with not enough people working at the moment, so we have put our frame off builds on hold. Hopefully we will be able to get back on it soon!

Re: Cranfords Hotrod Shop- 1970 GMC shortwide build

Well, today we sent the truck on down the road...unfinished. This build never got very far. We got an offer we couldn't refuse so she's gone. The guys that bought it seemed like the type that would get it finished, she went to a good home.
