Registered as a classic truck with old plates

I just registered my new plates for my 67 they have the year number on them. They game a small tag I guess it goes somewhere in the back plate?? And I'm all confused now. About having to do inspection. I no antiques you don't need inspection. What about Classic what do I need. Thx. For any help as you can tell its my first time lol.

My classic truck plates for Texas just said classic truck. You should look at your states DMV page for reference on what you need. I still needed an inspection in El Paso.

my truck is registered here in TX as a classic and yes you still have to have inspection.

For your inspection, all you need is lights, horn, rearview mirror and tires that are round....

My truck is registered as an antique and my son’s truck is registered as a classic. We are both using YOM license plates.

Did they give you a small silver sticker that expires in March of 2018? – If they did, then you’ve been registered as an antique not a classic. They (DVM) are supposed to provide you with a small metal plate to put the sticker on with the small metal plate mounted on top or bottom of your YOM license plate. I can take a picture of mine if you would like to see it.

Antique registration is $60 for five years. You can use YOM plates. No state inspection requirements.

Classic registration is the normal cost & must be renewed each year. You can use YOM plates. State inspection required every year.

As far as the little sticker they gave you goes, I'm old enough to remember when we put our registration & inspection stickers on the license plate instead of the windshield. I would assume that the sticker they gave you is your registration sticker.

If you registered the car as an Antique you aren't required to get a yearly inspection but there are severe limitations on how you use or how much you drive the vehicle. (Although I see guys driving their vehicle with antique plates to work and what not all the time) It's up to the officer if they want to strictly inforce the law.

If you registered it as a Classic, you still need a yearly inspection but that wouldn't include the smog part (Harris county) of the inspection. In addition to what rogergodding listed in a post earlier, I was told they would check the parking brake and windshield wipers.

you do not need an inspection. they should have gave you a smaller tag plate with that small tag to place with the license plate.

What is it that they check when you go to get a classic tagged? Can anyone tell me from what they've experienced with it in TX. Thanks
P.S not tryin to jack the thread I just need to know what they check with these old trucks

I guarantee you there are only two options for registration stickers. If you have the registration papers, with the sticker still attached to the full sheet, this will be very clear. If not, try to remember what a newer vehicle registration looks like when you get your renewal in the mail. If it's printed in the larger area that your newer vehicle registration comes on, it goes on the windshield. If your registration is printed on the smaller piece (usually has VOID printed on it for windshield registrations), then it goes on a small metal tab they should have given you. That tab has a hole in it so you can put the license plate bolt through it. If you don't have the tab, you can make one, go back and ask for one, or just put it on the rear plate. There is only one and it goes on the back plate. I'll see if I have a pic of my GTO that has YOM plates on it and antique registration. Oh yeah, no annual inspection necessary.

They just do a "safety inspection" to make sure you have the proper equipment on the vehicle. Like lights, turn signals, wipers (they are needed, I couldn't get my 71 inspected without them on and functional) and make sure it can stop. They just want to make sure you're not going to drive something that will put other people in harms way. No emissions test prior to 72 for sure, but I think it might be up to about 76? I don't know the exact cut off for it so ask when you get your vehicle inspected next.

Antique & Classic

Vehicles registered as "Antiques" are exempt from annual inspection. To see the restrictions on the use of antiques or to obtain more information on how to register your vehicle as "Antique", see the TXDMV website.

Vehicles registered as "Classic" are required to have an annual safety inspection. These types of vehicles are inspected like any passenger vehicle. Certain items of inspection, however, may or may not be required to be inspected, depending on the age of the car. (For example, seatbelts and anchorages are only required if the vehicle was originally manufactured with them.)

BTW: I noticed on the Application for Antique License Plates it states: "If using “old” Texas plates, the plates must be examined at your local county tax assessor-collector's office before submitting this application. To be approved, the Texas plates must be the same year as the year model of the antique vehicle, with the correct color scheme, and be in good readable condition. Qualifying license plates, such as Farm plates, Dealer plates, etc., may not be used. If approved, a plate tab with sticker will be issued to show valid registration.

ok iam confused you did say the plates have the year number on them right ? mine have the year number also but is registered as antique and i have the small tag and antique you dont need an inspection, classic yes. are you gonna daily drive maybe the reason they put it under classic ?

Hey Hector, I was going on his thread title which says "Registered as a classic truck...". I know that here in TX, if you want to use YOM plates you have the option of registering the vehicle as Antique or Classic. Depending on which he chose/chooses he'll have a different set of restrictions. Plus, I couldn't find where it states he will get a "plate tab and sticker" if he chose Classic.

If he chose Antique he ought to get with you and have one of those cool vintage replica inspection stickers made up.

Hey Chris and Hector -

I would think if 1old67’s truck was registered as a classic he would recognize the registration sticker must go on the front windshield – like any other “normal” registration sticker.

I’m willing to bet he is actually registered as an antique, even though the thread title indicates registered as a “Classic”.

I was actually confused from the beginning of the thread which is why I asked him to describe or show us his sticker.

BTW – those reproduction inspection stickers are really cool. I get questions about mine all the time.

Yeah that's what I was thinking when I couldn't find any info about a tag sticker being given to those who register as Classic. And he said he had been given one.

Oh and I have to clear up a mistake I made earlier, when I was a young driver here in Texas we used to put the year and month stickies on our license plate and our inspection sticker went inside the windshield. Can't believe I forgot that!

If any place gives you a hassle over a inspection go somewhere else. Couple years ago I had an inspection guy argue with me that my truck failed because I didnt have a catalytic converter on my truck. I argued with him for a minute that trucks didnt require them in 1970 but he didnt want to listen. So I went across the street and got it no questions asked.

Yes sir - I can remember when we got a new plate every year. Good times, good times.....

Edit - I'm not that old but I do remember helping Dad change the plates every year. One of my first memories working with Dad using his toolbox and tools.

I got a small plate for the small sticker they told be it goes on the back plate. They asked me if I wanted the sticker on my windshield or the one for my plate so I told them to give me the one for my plate But how are the cops going to no if I registered my truck as a classic or antique they won't know until they run my plates right??? So I don't get pulled over the cops will never no if I should have inspection I think I'm going to get one anyway but I didn't want to put the sticker on my front windshield.

Thanks for the link Hector. Makes me wanna register mine as an antique so that the only inspection sticker I run is a vintage one. Sorry 1old67. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. I do however think someone from Texas could benefit from all the info in this thread if they run across it with a search or something.
