Re: what s the best media for body panels

For body I use glass beads. Have not done a frame with media. Lots of time with a sander though.

Sandblast frame and you already said you don't really want to use the best on the body

Re: what s the best media for body panels

I prefer aluminum oxide but have been known to use sand if conditions are meet to avoid breathing any dust. Haven't used much sand in years due to silicosis street talk.

I use paint stripper, sanders, wire wheels, roloc, and any new fangeled gadget to get 90%.
Use media blasting to get the last 10%.

Soda, I think it's the best to remove paint and not distort the panels.

Re: what s the best media for body panels

thanks everyone for the replies, On using soda.. I under stand you need to wash down soda blasted panels and prime them right then, Not sure my time allows that to happen, Is this what you guys did?

Re: what s the best media for body panels

pretty much any media you use // blasting is not a set it ferget type thing , it is but the beginning of the process. you need to follow thru and finish preping and priming right now not later

Re: what s the best media for body panels

Another soda guy here. I had aftermarket bedsides so blasting wasn't needed. Everything else was soda. Went with sand on the frame and covered it in POR 15. I had bad luck with blasting of hoods. No matter what media was used they couldn't get it right. The blaster ruined a pristine 68' hood then replaced with another. Ruined that one too. They gave up and bought me a stock aftermarket hood. Not what I wanted but it fit good.

Re: what s the best media for body panels

I'm lead to believe soda is pricey, not sufficient to remove rust and doesn't leave much tooth for primer to bite. That's why I didn't pull the trigger on using soda.

Not sure on cost as compared to other media. Soda will not take out rust, my blaster soda blasted all the panels inside and out, including cab and bed, then touched up what little rust was underneath. I hauled the lot to my painter who scuffed it with scotch bright pad and primed it.

Check out this link and what they have to saw. The 72 cab in the pics is mine, and it came out great.

If I run across a good deal on bulk soda I'd love to try it. Then use AlOx for rust pits.

Re: what s the best media for body panels

did the whole truck with 100 grit and a d.a. but the hood "oil canned" so much I sent it out and had it plastic media blasted...came out great ,no distortion at all...had them do the cowl too cause hand sanding 2 paint jobs out of louvers sucks...takes it to bare metal but wont remove rust cause its not that abrasive ,no residue like soda...don't know if the stuffs compatible with home blast equipment cause I had it done

Re: what s the best media for body panels

The problem I always run into w/ specialty media is cost. Just need to find the inside deal I guess.

Professional equipment can ruin sheet metal in a hurry if operator is day dreaming about his cute girl friend

I have sand blasted back in the day w/o issue. Only had 5 hp and kept nozzle moving. Big plume. Left nice substrate. Easier than DA but must prepare for the sand which goes every where.

Re: what s the best media for body panels

At home I often use serious stripper and/or DA sander with heavy grit. Soda doesn't leave the surface rough, but never heard of that being an issue. When the metal got it's first paint job that is still hard to remove today it was as smooth or smoother than after soda blast or stripper. There's guy in my area who comes to you and is very reasonable. Makes doing it yourself look expensive.

Rust is another story. What blasts away rust warps good sheetmetal. So,sand/aluminum oxide on what can't be cut out and/or coarse sanding & chemical treatment...especially on surface rust
