1984 6.2L Not Running But Complete
Ok, I have a 6.2L diesel engine that does not currently run and I'm not sure I want to get into getting it running. I'm not planning on keeping it and would really like to yank it out and scrap whats left of the truck. I don't see a lot of diesels around here for sale, so I'm not sure what would be a fair price. It does turn over, but the injector lines look really rusty and it has been sitting for about 10 years. Any feedback is welcome!

I'm guessing it's so "rare" that nobody knows what it's worth.....that must mean it is worth a lot of money.........

Yes, that gives me a great starting point. I tried looking on eBay but the prices all seem really high, and most of the listings are for running engines.

I personally wouldn't pay much for an unknown diesel. Injector pumps are expensive if bad. Might be easier to part than sell whole. Be worth alot more if running.

I'm not much of a diesel mechanic, I'm still trying to find the spark plugs

Re: 1984 6.2L Not Running But Complete
The big thing with 6.2 is knowing if it's cracked or not. If you can find a good block, they are actually pretty desirable because guys are putting 6.5 TD rotating assemblies in them. The 6.2 blocks are actually better than a 6.5 block.

Re: 1984 6.2L Not Running But Complete
I may consider tearing it down, and getting the block looked at, I know a lot of them are cracked. This one is supposed to have just over 50K on it, but I was not able to get that documented, so its kind of a non-issue unless I tear it down and confirm that.

I have sold used engines like that and just tell guys if they have a problem, and if they bring me something from a machine shop stating the damage that is found I'll give them their money back. It's anyone's guess what kind of shape it's in, but then again why tear it all the way down if it's in good shape? Its a double edged sword whichever way you go! |

For what it's worth I paid $270 for an "unknown" condition military surplus Humvee engine.

Re: 1984 6.2L Not Running But Complete
That was an auction win on the Government Liquidation so it came with the crate too.
