my 66 C10 build
hello,all. i just took delivery of my next project truck. 1966 C10 short fleetside. she's a little rough but she's mine. now i just have to clean the garage and get her inside. as you can see in the pics most of the work on the floors and rockers is done. the previous owner did a nice job of welding the new parts in. there is still a LOT of bodywork to be done, but that is my specialty. wish me well.

Thanks az. This truck came from tennessee, but i guess it wasn't far enough down south. Unfortunately i am used to welding and fabricating patches for these rusty ol diamonds in the rough.

Hey if you got the skill then awesome. I have taken my first shot at welding. Started to fill in the molding holes. got a few filled so far. Will keep at it and see how I do.

Its really not that hard once you get the hang of it. Just go slow and let the panel cool between each hole so you don't warp the metal. That can be a real pain to fix. Are you using a mig welder? That is the best method. And easiest. Good luck.

Yeah its a Harbor Frieght one my dad got for use on his hotrod build. Still need to grind the welds to see how I did. Any thoughts on a good grinding wheel to use?

I like a 24 or 36 grit on a 3 inch roloc disc. These are made by 3m and they are real easy to use. They twist on with a quarter turn onto a quarter inch arbor that goes in a die grinder. I use a right angle air grinder. You can get one at harbor freight for about ten bucks, or you can buy a real good one for about forty bucks at northern tool. Harbor freight probably has the arbor and chinese discs too. You can use a coarse disc on an electric grinder also but be careful not to overheat the panel. The air grinder runs slower at about 90 psi and wont build up as much heat.

It does look like the PO did a nice job on the rockers and floors. What are your plans for the drivetrain?

Hi captainfab, not sure yet. I can buy the 427 tall deck and 350 turbo that was in it pretty cheaply, but i'm thinking it's going to be very costly to rebuild. The intake, distributor, and front drive brackets are all different from the car engines and therefore rare and expensive. I love the idea of a big block though. Maybe i will come across a regular car block to redo.

Yeah, I would pass on the 427 TD truck engine. You'll be better off finding a standard deck 454 to build.
