Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
Took me about 4 years to finally find a complete, bell housing, tranny & Hurst shifter, A-833 4 speed overdrive for my '72 C10. Logged 370 miles on my '72 truck to go get this thing a week ago. These things are hard to come across or have been for me to find. Now I just need to find a 67-72 C10 high-hump center floor piece & a cross member. Anyone else running one of these, should be a good addition for my driver. These are close enough to a 700R4 but you get the fun of the manual.

Nice find, in my book rowing your own gears is the most fun! It's a truck not a taxi cab.

I just looked that thing up cause I never heard of them before. What kind of truck did it come from to have a bell housing that will bolt up to a Chevy?

81-85 or so, it was a COPO option that's kind of hard to come across.

Re: Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
I have a removable transmission hump, though the hole is at the front of it. And I most likely have a cross member. I have several post in the for sale area. One is 72 longhorn parting out and the other is transmission humps ...

Re: Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
You know grancuda I don't think you'll need a high hump to fit that tranny in there. It's no taller than a 3 or 4 speed muncie.
As for using the bench seat shifter you might need to build an extension to make it work or you could do like they did in the 64-65 Nova's and make a notch in your seat. |

Yeah, I am not sure how the shifter is going to work out yet. I will make all adjustments in the handle and not modify the seat. Also, my motor is in the 6cyl position so it is set back even more than a regular V8 truck. Yes |

Re: Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
Got one, love it. Used a stock auto tranny crossmember and the factory mount holes. The BBC also uses the factory location frame holes. If you need overhaul parts a shop in Las Vegas http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...rhaul_kit.html sells various kits. There are also good sources of info on the net about them. I think it was Super Chevy that has a good rebuild article online. While I too wanted the Hurst logo shifter in mine, But the fit and feel of the factory shifter is spot on for me. Maybe I'll cut one up and have it rechromed sometime.

Re: Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
I have one that is going a factory 3 speed truck. With decent rearend gears, they are pretty fun trannys. Mine came out of an '81 GMC.

Re: Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
Volksworld is correct. The A-833 is the same code Chrysler used for transmissions used in the cars they built. The Chevrolet uses the Chrysler transmission. It is really neat the way they made it overdrive. If you notice the pictures from Dcarey, the 3 & 4 shift lever puts the rod down instead of up. The unsuspecting driver then shifts 1, 2, 4, 3. They only needed 2 special parts to make the overdrive. The cluster gear has a very large 3rd gear on it and the 3rd speed gear is very small, making 3rd gear overdrive. So the shift sequence is: low, 2nd, 4th ( direct ), then 3rd ( overdrive ). Ford did the same trick with their top loader. If you ever see a Ford top loader for sale CHEAP, look for the 3-4 lever to be upside down. That is used in pickups, like GM, but not cars. Roy

So I have got mixed info on the length, is the MY-6 the same length as a Saginaw 3 speed?

Re: Anyone Running the A-833 MY6 GM manual 4 Speed Overdrive
I thought of trying this but ended up with the stuff to go with the Camaro/S-10 T-5 hybrid trans. I too have gotten a high hump tunnel for mine and I know for sure that is not needed. Mine was a three on the tree so I took a van colum and filled the holes where the shifter pointer was and ground off the boss for the shifter and filled it all in real nice and then primed it all. It is all slick now so it looks like a factory floor shift tilt. Good luck with your conversion. Jim

Yes, they are both 21" overall length without the bellhousing.

Mine is the even rarer version that has the standard GM flange. Mine will bolt to any standard GM bellhousing.

I hate to wakeup the dead thread, but how did this turn out? Mine has been on the shop floor for 3 years now and it finally asked to go in the truck.
