2 rear brake questions?
Can the rear wheel bearings be worn enough for the drum to contact the edge of the brake shoes or baking plate when going around a corner??
Second what are the symptoms of worn springs in the rear drum brakes on a C10???? thanks for any help. |

Question 1: It's possible but they'd have to be very very worn. I'd lean more towards a warped drum or bent axle causing that problem. If the truck has been impacted in the wheel it's possible. I've seen it before.
If springs are worn it could cause the shoes to hang and not return to their released position which can cause the drum to overheat and warp or eventually wear the whole system out and you'll have metal on metal contact. |

Some deeper inspection is required on this one. It is also possible that the center pin is worn enough to allow it to move around quite a bit.
The axle bearing could be a part of it too, but many times when the bearing starts to go, it kills the axle itself. The hardening in the bearing surface is only so deep and once it is worn through the wear is accelerated. The thing is, this will usually show as a leak of the gear oil, which you didn't mention. So any of the posted suggestions could apply. You are going to have to tear into it and report back.

could just need cleaning and ajustment
the groove between the backing plate and the drum can fill with rust/dirt and grind hope thats the prob cause thats the cheapest n easiest fix how high is the pedal?

The full story is I had a shop fit new front discs and replace one leaking rear wheel cylinder.I drove it home and could smell burnt brake lining and found the left rear smoking.The shop is maybe 250 yards from my place so I drove it back and said fix it!They jacked up the rear wheel and could not turn the wheel they then backed off the adjuster and park brake cable.The drum was put on and turned freely by hand but started binding as soon as the wheel was put on.So the they backed it off on the adjuster some more it then stop binding.
I went for a 4 mile drive and my heat gun showed 87 on the right drum and 195f on the left.I drove back again and they said they don't know what is wrong as it all looks fine ????? I have just had enough of useless bloody mechanics who don't give a ****.I have a fully equipped workshop set up for bikes and have been constantly working on motorcycles for over 30 years as a hobby when I bought this truck I swore I would not lay a spanner on it and have all work done by the pros who are fully set up for the job.I have always had newish cars simply because I hate working on them and have no experience with cars. That has got to change as every bit of work I have had done on this truck has required me to fix or finish it off properly myself. I have just bought a 4 ton trolly jack and some stands and I will get the brakes sorted myself with some advice from this site I hope. I have bought a new spring kit for the rear brakes and will strip and clean the brakes next week and get them sorted. I just did the heater core which both shops I approached were not even interested in doing and it was pretty easy in the end so it looks like I am fixing this thing myself wherever possible from now on. If I listed all the dramas I have had with this truck directly as a result of sub standard mechanical work you would most likely not believe me. |

with a leak you should replace the shoes but
make sure the shoe is centered on the top pin i've seen them go off center and wear the shoe uneven on the long side

The rh side is ok so will just photograph both sides and have a look to see they have the springs in the right places.Then I will strip and clean everything and fit new springs.Then make sure they are bled correctly.Will post pics if I have any problems.
