Gotta give delmo credit

It takes one brave man to be on the leading creative edge. So I got my new smoothies the other day - got the tires mounted today - dug out these hubcaps that I've been squirreling away to create some delmo specials.... so now I'm standing over these with everything I need and thinking - man if I screw this up - and got to thinking man you really have to be willing to take some risks - so props to delmo for being on the leading/bleeding edge. Now I wonder how many days it takes before I'm willing to drill into these bad boys lol

Re: Gotta give delmo credit

I can only imagine the apprehension but DO IT!!! I've always hoped somebody would choose those center caps for that mod. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: Gotta give delmo credit

They are the 20" with 5.5 backspace. Went with the 255/35's and man do I love the look of those and got a steal on them at $109 a piece for the tires themselves. Day 2 - let's see if the braver hits me or I decide this is the day I run all new brake lines lol

Re: Gotta give delmo credit

I would PM or call Delmo and ask him what the spacing should be between the clips. With a snap clip, a fraction one way or the other can be the difference between a tight or a loose center cap. He can also tell you what he used to secure the clips to the wheel because that may have been an exercise in Trail and Error. Wheels are an expensive addition (especially big diameter ones), so I would do a bunch of research first.

Knowing Delmo, he probably built a drill jig that centers itself off of the center hole in the wheel. That would be the best way to do it. That way would ensure that the cap is dead center on the wheel.

Agreed. I actually read through his build where he was doing this mod - it doesn't show him using a jig but he very may well have so I will reach out- the plan is to find another way to test the placement of the clips - maybe a piece of 2 x 8 and using wood screws to attachment til I feel like I have the right placement prior to drilling - you are right - not something I want to screw up - thanks for the thoughts.

Those are awesome caps. Can you tell me what they are from? Also did you get in touch with Delmo? Did he impart any wisdom on drilling those wheels.

Re: Gotta give delmo credit

I just converted a set of 8 lug "nub" wheels to clip wheels recently. It is so different than what you are doing I might not be much help. Post up a pic of the wheel without the cap if you can.
