Re: 65 c10 power steering question
A rebuilt steering box from a parts store is only about $175, new pump and hoses, about another $75-80, & add a CaptFab bracket kit. You should be able to do all new for $350-400
Salvage yard pump, brackets, hoses, and gear box I wouldn't pay more than $100-125. so $200-250 should cover it with used parts. |

Re: 65 c10 power steering question
or you can go to the junk yard and by the power steering pump, and steering box for about $100, thats what I did, then I had to buy a bracket for the steering box (you can get that from captian fab) I think they are $100 or so, then later when you get more money replace the pump and steering box and use the stuff you bought at the junk yard for the core.

Re: 65 c10 power steering question
There is absolutely no reason to spend $700.00 on adding power steering, unless you really want to.
All you need is a '68-'87 C series truck power steering box and pitman arm. For the pump, you will need one from the same year range, but it will need to mattch the hose fitting style of the box. Those changed in about 1980. The brackets and pulleys will depend on what engine you have and what style of water pump. You can do it on a budget using, good used parts. When I built my Suburban 20+ years ago, I installed a good used steering box and pump. I put over 120,000 miles on that, and the seals on the box are just now starting to leak just slightly. The pump works just fine and doesn't leak a drop. Granted this may be an exception, but even if you get a couple years out of used parts. Just replace them with new or rebuilt parts when they start to leak or give problems.

Re: 65 c10 power steering question
listen to Captainfab. he gave me a list of what to get and this is what i am going to be doin shortly after getting my truck running. here is the part list and prices that my local orielys gave me
1970 chevy c10 p/s pump w/resivoir part# 20-6000 $45.99 $15.00 core gear box part# 27-7501 $ 124.99 $ 50.00 core pitman arm part# k6143 $ 68.99 p/s pressure hose part# 70911 $ 15.00 return hose part# 81206 $ 1.99/ft and finally Captianfab's bracket. prices might be a little different, i dont know. but all that has a lifetime warranty. so under $350, new parts, and warranty cant go wrong.... hope this helps Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 65 c10 power steering question
I don't see a mention of the particular engine these parts were sourced for, so I am assuming it is for a small block. The steering box, pitman arm and my adapter plate will be the same regardless of what engine you have. The pump, pump brackets, pulleys and hoses will need to be specific to a 292. You will want to look those up fie an application of '68 and newer. The factory pump brackets are going to be near impossible to find. It would be much simpler to just purchase the pump brackets from Davis Speed Equipoment

Re: 65 c10 power steering question
Yes, your column will need to be shortened as the power steering boxes are bigger and longer than the manual boxes. You can either purchase a piece from Captainfab that attaches to the shortened lower section, or you can go even more custom and add a collapsible steering shaft in the middle. The factory 63 columns are one solid shaft from the rag joint up to the steering wheel

Re: 65 c10 power steering question
You were asking about parts usability from the list for your 292.
As Christian said, the steering column shaft must be shortened. My installation instructions covers how to do that and how much if you want to reuse the original flange. If you opt for the tube and flange, how much you shorten the shaft is not quite as critical.
