Frame painting/coating options - What did you use on your frame

I am beginning to clean the frame and i started by using a twist knot wire wheel on an angle grinder, stripping all the old stuff off completely...I havent done a ton of it yet. I was planning on using POR 15. Ive heard POR doesnt actually stick well to smooth surfaces even when you use the marine clean and metal ready. I was planning on top coating it also which means i have to use the tie coat primer i guess, then the top coat...3 coats of this ****? sheesh...then i still have to buy the metal ready and marine clean for it too..maybe there is a more economical alternative product that i dont know of

Alot of people say it works fine..on smooth surfaces, i dont know. Anyways im just wondering what you all have used and what your results were. Im not going to be spraying any coating on, unless there is a good rattle can product. It will be something brushed on...let me know, thanks

the way I understand it, the metal ready/prep ready etches the smooth surface while it converts the rust.
i'm going to use it too, but never used it before this.

I've had adhesion issues with POR15 several times when I went over smooth metal. However, over sandblasted metal, you won't ever get it off. It definitely needs tooth to adhere to.

With frame exposed, I took off all the loose rust and dirt of by any means including wire brushes and in places with a sanding wheel. I gave it a couple of thorough washings and a good dry in the heat of Dallas TX. There are other good products out there but I like Zero Rust. I thinned it slightly then rolled most of it on with a non fuzzy 2 " roller. Some places I used a small brush and a rattle can of the same stuff. I use the same stuff on my axles front and back. Great adhesion and wants to be as close as it can to the metal.

Re: Frame painting/coating options - What did you use on your frame

My original plan was to PoR-15 mine. My friend is a painter and has suggested I just paint it and use a Flex-All additive to the clear coat. I am a long ways away from doing a frame-off so I've got plenty of time to figure it out.

Re: Frame painting/coating options - What did you use on your frame

I used the POR 15 chassis coat. Looks good and hard as nails.

From cheapest to most durable and expensive. tractor implement paint, POR 15, then the powder coating. Depends really on your time n funds.

Re: Frame painting/coating options - What did you use on your frame

Tractor paint from tractor supply
Aka
"Farm and implement" paint

Comes in quarts gallons and spray cans. You will find out real quick that it is not a typical spray paint. It is thick thick thick!

Frame was sandblasted and sprayed with primer first. I would have powder coated but had several repairs and mods to do first.
