Whats easier? SM 465 or SM 465 input shaft

So I've pulled the engine out and the input shaft bearing is bad on the 4spd. Is it easy to pull that out or do you have to basically disassemble the whole trans? I have a nice spare SM 465 I could swap in, whats easier, fix the one in there or swap the whole thing? Thanks,
jud

Pull the bearing retainer and the bearing comes out the front. If that is the only problem it's not a bad job.

sorry, did not mean the shaft could be pulled, that needs to come out the inside. but the bearing can be replaced W/O removing the shaft...

thanks guys, shaft and thowout are rusted together as well so it looks like i would be time ahead just swapping trannies. it was sitting for over 10 years with no hood or valve covers on. drained 8 qts of water out of pan and 2 drops of oil. i hope it isnt too hard to drop the trans out the bottom? its bolted to the np205 yet

Re: Whats easier? SM 465 or SM 465 input shaft

real easy. drop the x-member, unbolt the 8 bolts from the NP205 and go.

easier if you remove the shifter tower (I wouldn't try it without removing the shifter) and pull the trans hump.

google for removing the shifter if you never have before. there is a 'trick' to it. basically push down and twist on the shifter collar.

good luck!

So drop the tcase then split the two? I don't see why the xmember would need to come out if I just drop the trans by itself? I have the truck on a 2 post lift so as long as it doens't split hard from the tcase, shouldn't have to remove the shifter tower, right? Also, do you know the original colors for these? I may repaint the replacement.

Re: Whats easier? SM 465 or SM 465 input shaft

true, the x member bolts to the adapter... so split it on the trans side and you're good there!

and yeah, I don't have the luxury of the lift, but it its that high just snake the shifter through the floor.

I painted mine orange. no idea what the correct color is but I like seeing the orange t-case under the truck!
