Educate me: Need pics of an auxiliary battery actually attached to the OEM harness

Can't find the pics I need - all show an empty tray with no battery. I assume a side post battery - how does the harness positive wire attach to the battery?

Batteries need to run in parallel; pos to pos. & neg to frame&chassis ground. This increases the overall amperage capacity of the system will keeping voltage constant.

Thanks - I'm wondering what bolt/and or bracket secured the harness connection to the battery at both the pos and neg ends. What did GM do?

Might very well have had a deep cycle battery that typically use wingnut lugs. The factory harness IIRC uses two ring terminals for battery attachment just like a boat. Let me look through my pictures.

Thanks Tim - you are correct on the harness attachments. The neg "harness" is more like an independent pigtail ground IIRC with two ring terminals. The pos harness connect is a red wire ring terminal.

Here sort through this. As I read it the earlier trucks used the dissimilar size side termianl bolts and the later trucks used the same 3/8" for bolts. In a nutshell, IMHO they were just the standard side terminal cable bolts used for the TP2 harness to battery connection. The camper schematic above (from the 72 service manual) is not the same as the 71 revision in the assembly manual, it (ASY M) clearly indicates a side terminal battery.

As always, mucho appreciated Tim. I'm on the hunt for side terminal bolts 3/8" then - these must have threaded male ends. Funny how many pics of aux battery trays are on the site but I couldn't find one of an aux battery actually in use on a truck.

Pete, the photo your posted is a local truck here in Michigan. If I need to, I will track it down and get some more info/photos for you. I am not sure if he still owns the truck but a board member from Michigan about 50 miles from me owned it. I believe he sold it but it is possible to still get info from the current owner, I would believe.

Interesting tid bit for those adding this option to their trucks. GM installed the washer fluid bottle on the opposite (RH) fender. With the two j-blocks needed on this fender the bracket for the fluid bottle has to be mounted more rearward than normal. On the pic you can see one j-block is also slightly higher than the other. Using my K20 build as an example, in order to clear the inner fender it appears that the bracket has to be mounted higher than normal and you have to utilize a lower set of pre-existing holes in the bracket in order to get purchase on the fender unless GM had a different bracket on aux battery equipped trucks (I doubt it but who knows).

The washer bottle relocation is shown clearly in the assembly manual.
It shows the bracket holes (on the right fender) are 5.06" aft of the production junction block. The second junction block is located 2.00" forward of and level with the production junction block.

I love you man! I was relying on the wiring diagram and should have looked in greater detail. If you see the pic though (survivor truck) it looks as if the posterior j-block is higher (which I copied - doh!). We were going to locate the bracket holes relative to the third spot weld posterior to the rubber hood cushion mounted on the fender similar to pic. When you are in there, between the side post battery and the rear j-block there really isn't much room for variance in washer bracket placement. Forget adding the coolant overflow tank option Thanks Tim!
