grand cherokee steering shaft install
Ok guys i hear questions about this mod all the time. I looked and looked and only found people converting on newer pickups and gm cars. Well i bought a shaft off ebay. Came out of a 95 grand cherokee zj (93-98 are the same) after reasearching on the napa web site i found that the gc jeep had a 3/4 x 32 shaft on box, guess what they also listed a 68 manual box to have the same 3/4 x 32 (tho i thought gm's were all 30 or 36) well guess what napa was correct the shaft bolted right up to my 68 manual box that was the easy side. Now the other end took me about 30 min to do but was not bad. The jeep shaft has a 3/4 dd yoke on the joint. My van tilt as well as the stock c10 colums was a 3/4 x 36 spline. So i pulled the colum marked it and ground two flat spots on it (slowly and checking alot) and it was converted to 3/4 dd. The shaft already had a notch cut in it for the bolt to pass by and it also prevents the yoke from slipping off. So if you do this mod just put the notch at the 6 or 12 oclock position and then grind the flatts at 3 and 9 (this is if your looking at the end of the shaft. This really is a quick and painless mod. And from what i hear it clears up alot of slop. Im sure most wiould want power steering and well im not positive but i think the spline count is diffrent on that box. I had to do it out of nessety because my body drop and column relocation forced me to run two u joints. I bought this full shaft for 25$ u joints are 35- 70 each not counting making the shaft so it made sense for me
