Quadrajet Base Gasket Question

Seems to be a few of us working on quadrajunks today.

I have a question about base gaskets...

Here is the bottom of my carb-

Here is the old gasket-

and here is the question mark- here is the new gasket provided in the rebuild kit. Notice how much of the orifices are not covered the way the first gasket did...

Is the new one the right one and the one I should use or should I re-use the old one? I don't know if those orifices need to be covered up....

anybody know?

Re: Quadrajet Base Gasket Question

That new gasket is the same as the one i used after rebuild on my 72-402. I didnt like the looks of it either but it seems to be working fine.

OK, thanks. I figured I can try it and if the truck runs like crap, I can put the original one back in. I'll go with the new one first.

Didn't want to jack the other thread John.
You can get an inlet fitting that repairs your threads if you don't find a replacement body.

Thanks for the heads up. I talked to a buddy that owns an auto repair shop tonight to see if he had the helicoil tool. He didn't but did say he had several quadrajets I could scavenge parts from. If I can find a decent base I should be all set! That autozone kit might be "plan B"

Re: Quadrajet Base Gasket Question

I have three routes for my carb issue (stripped fuel inlet threads). I ordered the repair kit from Autozone and will pick it up Friday. I have no idea how it works or how it'll work but if I don't like it or it won't work, they'll take it back.

I got a donor carb from a buddy, took it home and gutted it this morning for the main body I need. It has a good fuel inlet.

Here are all the parts I didn't need- this thing was sitting outside and is pretty rough!

I'm at the airport now waiting for a flight to Boston so I'm going to let it soak all week in carb cleaning solvent. (I'm going to get my wife to flip it over a couple times during the week). I'll see what it looks like when I get home and decide if its useable.

During disassembly I found one valve that is seized into the body (the one by the fuel float that rides the metering rods up and down. I'm hoping it'll come loose after soaking for a week. If it doesn't and the rest of the body looks good, I'll see if I can gently drill it out without messing up the bore.

If neither of those work I'll just buy another carb. That would be a bummer, this one is really clean but I'm not going to throw good money at a quadrajet.

We'll see... I'll know this weekend when I get home.
