Chain or gear driven?
I have an '83 4x4 1 ton dually with a 4 speed transmission (no o/d). My research tells me it is a 205, but is it gear driven or chain driven? I have been told that it could possibly be chain driven.

NP205 is gear driven. Look for the little three-bolt cover between the rear output and the front output rear bearing support. That will tell you for sure it is a NP205.
The NP203 looks a lot like the NP205 and is chain-driven scrap iron. I tear the range box off and save it for people wanting to build a NP203/205 doubler, but junk the rest. The chain inside is useful, however, if you want to forge a knife...good steel like timing sets.

I checked the manual that I have and everything matches for the 205. I also have the 208 in the manual and it is also chain driven. Thanks, again.

The NP208 is chain driven and is an aluminum case, so just by looking at the case you'll be able tell whether it's a 208. They came with a big round tag affixed to the back of the case that identifies it as a 208. I suppose you could also use a magnet to confirm whether it's aluminum or steel.

Ya I don't think you'd ever find a 203 in a 1 ton dually.

Yep that be the old trusty NP205. That's the only way to go they are stout. Gear to gear is nice so much stronger then the chains lol!
