Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
I Swiss cheesed my factory air cleaner today- I drilled a bunch of holes on the backside and underneath to get better airflow through a stock looking unit. Then I spent a few hours wet sanding it to get it ready for paint. What can I use to get a good factory-like finish? I've got some rustoleum semi-gloss that I could shoot it with but want to know if the is anything that might look better. I didn't see anything at Eastwoods I liked. The first thing you see when you pop the hood is the air cleaner and I want it to look original. Any thoughts/ideas?

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
I normally use good gloss black spray paint. I don't know if this is technically factory correct but it definitely looks original.

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
Semi gloss flat black. They say that John Deere blitz black is very, very close to the original finish.

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
. . . .
I think the "original" finish was a lot "glossier" then most people remember. Below, is a picture of that 70 C-10 with 80 miles that was for sale a couple of years ago. . . . the air cleaner and the exhaust tube DO have some gloss to them !!! . . . . |

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
I dunno... for 80 miles that engine sure looks aged. The air cleaner definitely outshines it.

I've got some buddies with paint booths. I wonder if I could bribe them to spray it for me.... With the hours of sanding, it'd be a shame for me to mess it up. Maybe I'll revisit delmo's engine pics. He's inspired me to paint my block the body color (medium blue) and the rest in black. That looks so sweet on his builds.

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
The air cleaner is definitely more gloss than the chassis and underhood black. It carries over into the muscle car restoration as well. Trevor

I found this on an olds forum where they were discussing the same thing... http://www.rickscamaros.com/1968+che...oss-black.html (product discontinued though- bummer). I know I'm way overanalyzing this but if I can't work on the truck (working out of town), at least I can research stuff... added: found this on a corvette forum. I think I'll see if I can find it.... Buy a can of "Plasti-Kote..... T3 - Hot Rod Black". Its a lacquer / high heat resistant coating. I swear by this stuff, and it pass's NCRS judging as well. Heat the part to remove the moisture held within the metal....either an oven bake or small torch. Apply a light coat or dusting to all the hard to get to area's first. Let it dry, and then come up from there. Two coats should be more than enough.

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
I used a flat black. I don't know what exact paint. It was something my neighbor had in his gun at the time. Then I shot it with satin clearcoat.
I left my inside unpainted and just cleared it as well. End result matched up to my new GM valve covers. |

I don't have a photo now but Dupli Color gloss black engine enamel works great and has just the right amount of gloss. It looks like chassis black.

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
I've used Eastwood gloss chassis black, goes on well, appears to be correct gloss, and, most importantly, it's very durable.

Re: Correct paint finish for air cleaner?
My Harley is decked out with chrome... I want to keep the truck simpler with no chrome under the hood.
