Someone scabbed a Saginaw car transmission into your 1-ton.

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

So you're wanting to put that one in? Not sure that is a hot idea. 1 ton's are heavy and the sag 4 speed isn't exactly ideal for weight... Plus if you tow 'foget about it. If it's been upgraded, heavily, it might make it... Might...

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

yeah looks like a 3.11 first saggy...

kinda like the one in my truck... tho mine isn't a one ton and it's meant to do burnouts to keep the trans alive..

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

I wasn't clear on this, the truck was a 1ton but is a 1/2 CreweCab Short Bed.
I was gonna convert to an Auto trans but figure'd a 4 speed would be cool in it. It has the peddle and big hole in the floor already so,,,,,,,,,,,,,, .

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

THe big hole in the floor won't help you. The shifter handle will be right under the front of the seat. The sag will live behind a bigbolck if you drive it like it has an egg under the gas pedal. Put an automatic in it with a tall Lokar shifter in it.

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

why would it be under the seat?

you can run it.. but to live in a heavy truck like that it needs some gears.. like 3.42's.. maybe higher depending on tire.. and i wouldnt exactly abuse it unless you know the tires will spin... also keep a spare!

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

What manual trans would be a good substitute for this saginaw? I'm thinking about putting one behind a big block too and I don't want the granny 4-speed. Big power though, 500/560 and a 3.73 posi. Tires boil easily. No towing.

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

A m22 is a great trans but its loud they whine no overdrive and today people think they are made out of gold price wise. With gas prices slowly climbing up a overdrive gear is a must even with something high powered.

Behold! http://autogear.net/ag_archive/order...eedpricing.htm

Now munchies are road racing transmissions (m22 especially)not drag racing transmissions. Although the AGE transmissions are very beefy for a muncie ESP their m22. They even have O/D muncies. Score! pricing is less than original muncies too

The Saginaw 4spd is fine for daily drivers just don't drag race with big hp or power shift them. Otherwise they do pretty ok.

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

The m21y could be called a overdrive with a .859 gear but its more for road racing not the streets.A street overdrive is .75 or less a tko600 has a overdrive of .64 a t65 depending what its from is .50 to .63.

All muncies were road race boxes period. Gm really didnt dabble in drag race gear jammers. the m22x is thier road race box. But the m21y will still make something like 3:73s more livable and considering the prices. It's not a bad way to go. The others are great as well can't argue there more practical if you have the money for them and drive with shorter rear gears more than just weekends and need the strength as well. Just depends on what the users need. The a833 overdrive is still pretty stout. The early a883s were wheel standing with hemis. Don't think anyone's really put a good condition overdrive a833 throught the paces yet.

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

my truck just has a stock (tire'd) 350, 1/2 ton with a 31" rear tire and 3.73 gears. it will just get limit'd daily driver use.
I have this Saginaw trans and could exchange it for a Muncie if need be,,I think my trouble now will be come'n up with a shifter with out buy'n a new one. Moma said I'm over budget already and she want's to drive it soon !

Re: 4 speed in my CCSB

That is a Muncie but just the casting numbers isn't a sure fire way to identify which one. It's most likely an m21 none of these transmissions are great for dumping the clutches. The Muncie will take power shifting but not a lot. The iron midplates from AGE help support that an are a great upgrade regardless of use since the aluminum mid plates wear

Pull the side cover and give it a good inspection. The shift forks and syncros and side cover holes for the shift pins. All normal wear and tear stuff. These boxes are 40+ years old anymore
