Putting a pickup bed on a c&c

I picking up a new square next week but I don't think I did enough research into what I was buying. It's an '87 V30 with no box or bed. I got it thinking it would be easy to just throw a regular long bed on it. The truck has a 2 piece drive shaft and a 14 bolt so I'm afraid it's a 60 inch c&c model and not 56 inch regular pickup.

How much of a hassle would it be to put a bed on this truck ?

The bad news the rear end is more narrow then a normal pickups and the frame is longer then a normal long bed.The good news you could shorten the frame to long bed or even short bed if you want.The rear end you can keep if you put a lift on it or replace it for a pickup one.

Does this mean the tires will rub the bed?

I have a 1977 c30 c&c single cab.

Could you just run spaces on the rear to push the wheels out? or get a different offset for the wheels ??

I have had the thought about cutting my C&C K30 down to be able to put a dually bed on it but think I will just try to buy one that has the bed on it already. Althought the C&C frames are a bit more beefy I don't I will have it loaded to the point where I can justify the need for the extra thinkness of the frame.

When I saw the 14 bolt ff I was thinking that it was just a truck that someone put utility box on in place of the pickup box. Later when I remembered it had a 2 piece driveshaft I wondered if it may be a c&c. From looking at it with the box that the guy had on it it didn't look like the wheelbase was longer than a regular pickup but my eyes aren't good enough to spot a 4 nice difference. The story I was given was that it was special ordered by AT&T to work in the rural areas. I have a Dana 70 dually rear but what to do with the extra 4 inches of wheelbase?

SRW? you may be fine, I don't remember the dimensions though. Most times a person refers to a cab and chassis, it's dual rw.

Yes, it's definatly a SRW. I really hope that's the case but if there's ever a rare /odd thing I'll be the first to find it. I hope this time is the exception. The seller keeps telling me it's an '88 but I didn't think there was a standard cab SWR V30 in '88 so I'm assuming it's an '87.

so when it was mentioned that the c & c rear ends were narrower than regular rear ends was that because it was assumed that it was a dually or are c & c srw rear ends narrower than regular truck rear ends?

I'd love to flat bed it but I have no cash left over and no fab skills. If I understand correctly rear axle width is the same as any K10 or K20 but because it's a v30 the spring perches are closer together because of different hangers on 1 tons. Right?

Correct; spring perch dimension is different than 10 or 20, but WMS (wheel mounting surface) is the same.

Yes, CUCV M1031s are such an example, the 3rd digit in the serial number would be a "B" signifying a C and C, but its still a pickup frame. SRW C31003s could also be ordered back during the square body era, thus you could get a 9 foot SRW utility body. You had to special order "Dual Rear Wheel" delete. We had some of those at work, the "car salesmen only" of that era had no idea what you were talking about lol.

Good to know. I do know that there were odd vehicles for utilities and railroad, didn't know they could be ordered C+C. Though if I thought about it, if they all came as pick-up's, the dealership would have a pile of old beds laying around.

That truck might not be a c&c it could be a normal 1 ton pickup,Is there a way to tell by the vin ?

I think the confusion is between model numbers. ANY model number could be ordered as a cab and chassis. The NON pickup models that are cab and chassis are C/K 31003 (135.5 inch wheel base) and C/K 31403 (159.5 inch wheel base) IN the vin if The third digit i is a "B" or a "D" just meant "incomplete truck".

Bringing this back from the dead...

I got the truck home and it's as I feared. It's a 135.5 wheelbase so it's 4 inches longer than a normal pickup. It's also an. '88 which I didn't think existed. (One ton single cab 4wd).

Is there anyone who has tried putting a bed on one if these? I don't have the money or skill to make or buy a flatbed and this truck is an absolute brute that's too good to part out.

Is that a Dana 60 up front?
C&C aren't nearly the PITA for squares as the next generation where the General completely changed frames and only a work bed will fit on a C&C and vice versa.

Just to finish your thought the "pickup length" version would be a C/K 309 03.

Hmm. I could live with that look. The gap isn't as bad as I imagined it would be. I wish I had the skills needed to lengthen the bed but at this point I just can't.

Yes that is a Dana 60 in the front. That's why I got the truck was because of the way it was built. Dana 60, 14ff rear, 4 speed with hyd clutch , hydroboost and fuel injection. All the best pieces gm had to offer IMHO.

So the bed I have just just sit on the frame same as a regular truck except for a 4" gap right ?

Can anyone look at my spid and see if it has any other interesting options? I still don't believe this is an ' 88 but all the tags say it is.
