Dana 70 or 70 HD

I have a 76 c 30 and read some where that the difference between the two axles is the Dana 70 has 3in axle tubes and the HD 4in. Is this the OD measurement? I am trying to repalce the gear set one web site shows a 10.25in gear and another 10.5in. Could this just be a missprint? I am waiting on a repy from there tech support. Does any one have any ideas on this? Also is there any brand of gear someone would recomend or one to stay away form not doing any regular heavy pulling.

Re: Dana 70 or 70 HD

Your Dually should have a Dana 70HD, All Dana 70's have a 10.5" ring gear.

Stay with Genuine Spicer gears, I really like Yukon Gears, Easy set-up, & Quiet.....May not be as long lasting as Spicer gears though??

Are you ding this yourself? In my opinion Dana's are the hardest rears to set-up (Correctly). A case spreader & pinion depth gauge are necessary.

Re: Dana 70 or 70 HD

I thought they all had 10.5 ring gears. I saw them on the Summit Racing site which alot of people in this area have refered me to.

I have never messed with diff before I have a freind how owns a garage and drag races. Says he has plenty of shims if needed and told me what bearings and seals to order to get it back together.

Re: Dana 70 or 70 HD

I just put another dana 70 in one of my C30's. I would do like a 373 gear if I wasn't hauling a whole lot. I don't believe there is a 70 and a 70HD. They are super heavy duty already. I think a Dana 70 is similar to a dana 60 but with bigger tubes.

Re: Dana 70 or 70 HD

I was going to go with 3:54 then maybe I will not need and OD tranny. I do minimal med weight towing. I think I read that on wiki about the 70 and the 70 HD. I did find one web site that did give me that option when searching for parts. Cannot remember if it was Summit Racing or Randy's ring and pinnion. I think the only differcnce is the tubes and everything else is the same

No 3.73 gear for Dana's, Goes from 3.54 straight to 4.10.

The Dana 70HD is used in Dually C30's, Not sure GM ever used the regular Dana 70, But Dodge did.
