Stainless Steel Tailgate Handle

Are there differences between a Chev and GMC stainless steel tailgate handle cover? I took one from an unknown year Chev Cheyenne Super and it would not fit on a 72 GMC Sierra Grande. They kind of clip on and it couldn't "grab" enough of the upper lip in order to keep from falling off. Am pretty sure that both tailgates are original to their respective vehicles and certain they are not aftermarket.

I may even be wrong, as I'm not certain if the Sierra Grande even came w/the stainless tailgate lever cover. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailgate Handle

I have never tried installing a 72 super cover. I did remove one from a rusted out 72 super tailgate I have. I looked at the handle its self and it doesnt "look" any different from the non super gate handle on my 70 longhorn or 72 truck bed trailer gates. I ddint take any measurements though. Puzzler.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailgate Handle

One would think that it would be a no brainer; remove part from old tailgate, clean it up and intall on new tailgate. Not so....... There is a distinct difference between the painted tailgate handles on the Chev and GMC. Interesting.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailgate Handle

Not sure if the Sierra Grande had the cover ornot, but judging from the fact that I have seen SPID labels on gmc sg's list the option as "cheyenne super" i would assume it has everything a cheyenne super had.

I will take a look at a gmc gate i have. Fyi 72 cheyenne super had stainless cover. 71 had chrome handle

Re: Stainless Steel Tailgate Handle

i think it really depends on how the cover is removed// they slide off not pop off/// popin it off will deform it and cause a no fit problem

Re: Stainless Steel Tailgate Handle

Pop off is the way to take it off. I did not bend the cover in any way shape or form when I removed it. The fitting problem is due to 2 different styles of tailgate handle.
