383 or ls1
I have a 65 burban..can't make my mind up.. I got a buddy that has a fresh 383 for 1200.. I want it to be quick. I know it's a lot easier dropping a carb motor in rather then a ls1.. what do you guys think?

Re: 383 or ls1
I've always went carbureted. It has always been easier. Now I just bought a 6. L and 4l80 for my 63. Aftermarket and sites like this have made the ls swap easy now. just my .02 but it will be nice to tune my truck without having to shower before I get back in it

Re: 383 or ls1
I am going LS with my 65. Power and drivability is unbeatable. I paid $700 for my engine out of a 07 tahoe with 31000 miles on it.

Re: 383 or ls1
Assuming it's really no more than a drop-in, I would say that the $1,200 for the 383 is going to be very tough to beat... That being said, given the choice, I would go the LS/LM route... The reason being, greater power potential, potentially better fuel economy, and better longevity. However, I would keep the injection on the LS... I saw an episode on Trucks where they took a 2001 Silverado Fuel Pump and showed how easily it can be installed in a Blazer tank that is swapped into the rear of a truck (it was a 67-72, but the same rules apply). That would provide the psi that the injection needs. You can then send your wiring harness and computer off and for about $200 they'll send you back your harness with all of the stuff you don't need removed and will reflash the computer to allow the engine to work in it's new environment and form (i.e., with the harness altered). All that being said, I can't imagine that you'd be able to swap in an LS/LM for anywhere near cheaper than the 383. That's why I am going the 383 route for now myself... Figure I can always pull it and toss it in a Camaro or maybe my MGB...
Good Luck!

Re: 383 or ls1
When restoring an old truck I prefer the older look. I think the 383 cause it would look better, and those things have some power to! But it your money. Whatever works for you! Can't wait to see your progress!

Re: 383 or ls1
I just put a 5.3L and a 4l60 in my 65, it was out of a 2002 silverado, when I got the truck it had a 350 and a TH400. I modified the wiring harness myself and sent the PCM off to be re-programed ($75). I have to say that given the choice from now on I will always go with a LS based engine. The drivability is much better and the startup and tuning is not a problem at all.

Re: 383 or ls1
383 is a good strong motor with decent life if its not to crazy had the oil changed and was built right. etc... (not saying your friend did a bad job) Driveablility and maintenance I would say the LS with a 4l60 is going to be great. Parts are widly availible. They make great power with just bolt ons. 383 ...it doesnt sound like your going to race it. So why not. Speed is relative on your ability and parts on hand...so if you got money for either do what you will be happy with in the long run. Both are good engines just the application of them changes their durability.

Re: 383 or ls1
roar! the 383 is complete.. drop it in and turn the key... id race it for sure.. im starting to second guess myself now... like stated before the ls is where the power is at... I guess for now ill go with the 383.. maybe later down the road ill switch to a ls1... it's a little more money for an ls swap right? as far as putting decent numbers to the tires?

Re: 383 or ls1
I would get the 383 for now and keep an eye out for a wrecked tahoe or truck or whatever. Pull the 383 and put it in a vega or datsun or whatever.

Re: 383 or ls1
I just put a 383 stroker in mine...about 420 hp from Engine Kits in Bakersfield CA. Unbelievable the amount of torque that sucker has compared to the old 350. I'm starting to think it may have TOO much power...
Either way, you'll be happy! Tom
