My 1970 Stepside - 3350lbs

Well, I sounded like an idiot asking the grain elevator folks if their scale was accurate. I couldn't believe that the truck only weighed 3540 with a 190lb driver! My 84 Camaro is only 100lbs lighter an aluminum LS, roll bar, 9", etc. And I've stripped that thing down to only the essentials!

Stock L6/Th350, oak wood floor in the bed, and totally stock aside from a 1-wire alternator. Looks like I've got some potential here for a fun muscle truck, I was just assuming it'd be over 4000lbs.

Haha asking the elevator if their scales are accurate was a ballsy question! My bed comes back from the body shop today, I plan on weighing mine at the elevator with the small block and th350 before I swap out to the 496/400 and gear vendors. Im very curious to see how much weight it adds. The 496 has aluminum heads and everthing else, intake, brackets etc.. im hoping it doesn't add to much compared to the iron headed sbc.

if rust weight less than metal my truck should really be a feather weight :-) no wonder my 305 feels fast.

It is pretty common to think that older trucks are heavy. Consider that they don't usually have any power accessories ( seats, windows, door locks), much sound deadener, no rear Interior etc...

Years ago a friend used to always use weight as an excuse for his 77 long bed to always be slower than another friends 66 El Camino. The El Camino owner bet him $100 that the El Camino was at least 200lbs heavier... and it was!

Trucks are real light and have lots of room for lots of motor- but that light weight is what makes it so hard (or expensive) to get one to hook up!

Mine weighs in at 3900 with a full tank of gas. Thats after putting probably 250 lbs of patch panels into the floor and rockers....LOL

Indeed, the distribution seems to be "less than optimal".

You missed the guy here last month that thought his truck weighed 4800 lbs!

Years ago I had a '79 short/fleet Silverado that I converted from a diesel to a mild 455 Olds. Surprised me how HEAVY it was.. 4608 lb. My "friends" all said "that's with you in it, right". No traction 14.60's @ 96mph.

My 72 Stepside was weighed for registration here, weighed 1,700kg which equals 3,750 pounds

I'd have to look at mine but I think my plate says "4,500 lbs" but I could be wrong. My dad rebuilt the bed with 1/8" steel so mine is probably 250 lbs or more heavier.

When I'm done and she's back on the road, I'll get her weighed and post.

I've seen a number in that range (maybe even spot-on same) on the back of an old 1970 Chevy Truck sales brochure. I'd say the scale is right. Just to verify, weigh it again and take your Camaro there the same day and compare numbers.

I've got a 4x4, weighed it on a scale and came out to 5000. Everywhere I read on the net says 4000-4500....


I wonder if these scales aren't accurate or something?

If I remember right the truck was 3680 and the El Camino was right around 3900.
