Bed wood
Hi Everyone,
I'm gonna be replacing the wood in the short fleet bed real soon. What did you use in the beds of your trucks? If you guys have pics, please post them. TIA, David

I'm wondering the same thing. I wonder if Pergo (sp?) or some other laminate (fake wood) flooring would be more durable?

I'm not sure how durable laminated wood is. I was thinking of going with some yellow pine, or use some plywood sheets.

Yellow Pine is what the factory used. Many people like to use Oak. Pine is softer, Oak is harder and has a tendency to split when exposed to weather, also turns black when water gets under whatever kind of clear coat(varnish) becomes compromised. If you plan to just paint it like stock trucks were you could use either. If your building a show truck, then IMHO Mahogany or Teak looks best. For a nice every day driver. I'd go with the yellow pine, left bare or finished with a nice colored deck stain of your choice (easy to touch up when it gets scuffed). And if you shop a little a pre cut kit can be found for around the $150.00 range. Just my .02, Tony

red oak plywood
I just finished my be bed 64 pickup. I used red oak laminate plywood, two sheets for fleetside. All stainless hardware, marine grade varnish. All stuff was bought from Bruce Horkey's Wood & Parts, except for plywood. He's wood kit were a little high for me.

bed wood
use , trex . www.trex.com or timbertech www.timbertech.com or evergrain . evergrain has been embossed to look like real wood but is 4 times stronger and 100 times more durable as with the others . I work at A lumber store and sell this stuff - I will be using the timbertech .

Don't go ply wood.....1 inch Yellow pine can be had for about $80 uncut from a lumber yard...be sure there are no warped boards or you will pay later...like me Just a bit. You can pick up a stainless steel bed strip kit for about $130 from Chevy duty. They are not polished but look real damn close. A bed bolt kit will run you about another $40. Total price about $300, total time about a long week or so for multiple varnish coats, (if necassary) and about 1-2 days to cut and lay the wood. No need to remove the bed, it can be done just as effeciently with the bed on. Something that you will deffinelty appreciate as soon as you finish it up.
